URGENT : STREET MUSICIANS ARE ABOUT TO BE BANNED !!!
As you all well know, Santa Cruz's musical scene is under attack from all sides. Venues for live music are dwindling. It is excessively expensive to rent musical space in town. Clubs have gotten very conservative and unsupportive of helping new bands to build a following and mature. Music education is down in the schools. There is a mass exodus of musicians from Santa Cruz.
"I was just interviewed by the Metro in an article about the exodus of musicians and other artists from town. They interviewed me because they wanted to know why I have decided to stay. I told them that I'm staying 1) because I love Santa Cruz's creative/unorthodox vibe and 2) I'm really pissed off and have determined to stay and fight for the quality of life that is so quickly being eroded here.
Well, guys, here is something tangible you can do to help me (and Justin Mayer and everyone) to fight. Please read this and lend a hand........write a message here..........attend a city council meeting...."
Yours, cantankerously ;-) Rick Walker
WEBMISTRESS NOTE: This message board will be monitored and comments forwarded to the proper authorities. Let's create our own "Town Hall Meeting" where we can ALL be heard.

Hi guys, The famous guitar builder (clapton, prince, et. al.) Rick Turner just sent this letter to the city council in response to recent activities. I just found out today that Patti Sapone effectively ended the outdoor live thursday concerts that the Crow's Nest has throw for many years. Sambada has been cancelled for their gig this week, consequently (an obvious breach of contract). We need to act rationally and change the laws but I also think it would be a very, very good time to turn up the heat with our trusted city council while people are fired up about it. We're in grave danger of losing outdoor music........period.......for the rest of the summer (especially since the council will soon break until September which is what I believe Chip told me).
I sometimes feel like that we are in the story of the emperors new clothes. It is true that the laws need to be changed and/or clarified but Officer Patti Sapone and her unreasonable phobias concerning alchohol consumption just seem to be cropping up with great regularity.
I also talked today to one of the heads of the Cabrillo Music Festival who said he could be counted on to protest vociferously. They had a really unpleasant experience with Officer Sapone last year in trying to put on their International Street Bazaar in front of the Cabrillo Music Festival. All of these people (and I too, have a doozy of a story about Officer Sapone's arbitrariness) are respected members and taxpayers in our community. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks for your time. yours, Rick
P.S. I'm getting ready to fire off a strongly worded letter to the City Council, but I would like your input before I do (I can easily get a little hot headed about these things and I would really like your feedback)
