The seven-member Arts Commission was established in 1977 to advise the City Council on programs which enhance the aesthetic and cultural quality of life in the city.
The Commission supports the arts by overseeing the development and implementation of the Public Art Master Plan, which includes a public art ordinance which provides 2% for art in all eligible City capital improvement projects and also includes a program for the placement of sculpture and murals in public places and a "work on loan" program through which the city accepts works of art from their creators or owners on a temporary basis and exhibits them in public places. Competitions for commissioned works are sponsored. Financial support grants for artists and organizations in both the visual and performing arts are awarded yearly. Applications for support grants for non-profit organizations and individual artists are accepted from mid-August through mid-September. Awarded Catagories include: Music, dance, theatre, literature, painting, sculpture, film, fine crafts, photography and public art.
