Subject Voices of Sanity

Friends & Family -
In the midst of varieties of emotional responses to the extreme act of
terrorism that took place last Tuesday, I have been searching for the voices of "higher consciousness". It is really scary to see a continuation of the same response to aggression that has created the endless imbalances that have kept WAR a part of humanity's story through its entire history. It's true that evil exists - but how shall we deal with it ?

I will be sending out messages as I find them. And I have offered a brief
comment here also...

On the playground, the natural tendency is for the young boys to fight to get their way while the girls tend to use verbal skills to negotiate and reorganize the situation to be more fair for all involved. This might be a good model for politics of sanity.

This whole event reminds me of the "small" acts of terrorism perpetuated by our own people...the school shootings, employees "gone postal", and men
killing their entire family to retain "control" when they feel like they have lost their superiority. It is the same motivation for those terrorists. Sadly, they feel like this is the only way they have to strike out.

The world simply needs more Compassion and Loving Intervention to STOP
the evil. Individuals must be encouraged and allowed to create international movements that can provide a human face to changing bad behavior by individuals and groups around the globe where people are suffering by punishing force and torture. What if a Peace Force of hundreds/thousands of women, children, and peaceful men marched into the country of Afghanistanand demanded they stop persecuting their women and children and promoting terrorism. What if those people worked side-by-side with their citizens to help improve their living situation with sustainable, ecologically,sound technology. What if we embraced them with love & respect. That response would succeed and would be a seed for the evolution of humanity toward a true New Age of planetary peace & prosperity.

Our involvement as a nation includes re-thinking our participation in the
entire global economy. Money has been the ruler of decision-making for too
long and is killing the human spirit as well as destroying the natural
environment of the planet.

This is our wake-up call. What world do we want to wake-up in?

My First Response to the Tragic Events of September 11, 2001. At times like this it is important to feel and honor our connection with all humanity, with all living beings. My heart and prayers go out to the victims and their families of today's catastrophe. And I am moved, also, to try to
understand the terrible pain of the suicide bombers, pain and anger that catapulted them to such insanities.

It is definitely a wake-up call for the entire world to pay attention to the deep, deep need everyone has for fair treatment and recognition. As I see it, we elect our governments, they respond to corporate pressures and make decisions based on questionable economic and geopolitical priorities. People, many millions of people, are often left suffering as a result of
these decisions. Their deepest needs go unheard and unmet.

Today's events are a response to and consequence of that chain of responsibilities. If ever there was a time for a "global mind change," this is it. We need more than ever to shift away from fear and greed and hatred, and open our hearts to compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and love. If not, a likely scenario is that today, as horrible as it is, will be just a precursor to events even more unthinkable.

As always, it begins with each of us. Each of us has a choice to support those who run our lives from a base of greed and fear, or to support the deepest intentions alive in everyone's heart, I believe, for a civilization that honors and nourishes the wellbeing of us all.

FRIENDS:

Yes, there is hope.

The bright light today was ABC's Town Hall-style talk with children in
New York this morning facilitated by Peter Jennings. They spoke
honestly & thoughtfully, very unlike the fixed reactive rhetoric spouted
by "angry" adults that the media focuses on. They were concerned
about WHY the terrorists would commit such an outrageous act
(including suicide) and wanted to know about the Muslim/Islamic
religion. They knew that they had not been told enough to understand
beyond the "buzz words" and and wanted things explained honestly.
Many of them knew the U.S. had bombed other countries, killing
innocent civilians and sensed that the terrorist acts Tuesday were "pay
back" for what we did to them. THEY WANTED US TO SHOW
COMPASSION TO THESE COUNTRIES WHERE PEOPLE ARE
SUFFERING, PERHAPS BECAUSE OF OUR ACTIONS. They do not
want a world of terrorism, but they wanted our country to abide by the
same standards...that is, not terrorize other nations for our "beliefs"(Oh yeah, and "share the wealth").

The message I'm passing on today is forwarded from another
artist/community activist - Rick Walker. He sends a message from
Steve Nivea, a Professor of Middle-East Politics. It describes very
clearly the true nature of the "renegade" nations and terrorists put into
perspective. Most telling: Osama bin Laden was once an American ally
we supported because he was against another of our enemies. This
seems to be repeated often in our history of international conflict. Read

Hi everyone, What follows is the best analysis of the roots of the
middleeastern terrorism that has struck our country this week that I have read. Aside from fighting for the rights of artists in Santa Cruz
County, I eschew political activity, but I am very concerned that the
current emotionally based call for a War on Terrorism has not taken
the facts into consideration. We don't want to live with terrorism for the rest of our lives and what follows really helped me to understand and make sense of this horrible tragedy.

My deepest sympathies go out to all of the people who were killed and to all the millions of lives who have been impacted by their deaths. May justice and peace prevail on our planet............god bless. Rick Walker

UNDERSTANDING MIDDLE EASTERN SOUCES of VIOLENCE
AGAINST the UNITED STATES

In the wake of the immense and sickening tragedy of the recent attacks it is difficult to get beyond the horror and shock of what has just
happened and engage in some reflection on the sources of violence against the United States. This is understandable given the almost unbelievable nature of this attack. Yet it is more necessary than everm if one is to cope with the tragedy and try to find ways to make sure it will never happen again.

What we will see in the next few days and weeks will be investigations, arrests of individuals and intense speculation about which groups or states did this and how the United States should respond.
Unfortunately, if the pattern of past responses to such attacks is repeated, we will probably not learn a great deal about the reasons
behind why this attack happened, or the broader sources of violenceagainst the United States over the past decade.

We are hearing substantial reports of a Middle Eastern connection to
this attack and media coverage has frequently mentioned the name of
Osama bin Laden as the number one terrorist suspect and mastermind of
this operation. If this evidence is verified, it is extremely important to gain clarity about the specific actors and their motivations before one can even think about how to respond. For Americans who like their hero's and villains portrayed in simple dichotomies of good and evil, the result of this kind of clarity could be disturbing because the United States has created many enemies through its policies in the Middle East over the past century and bears a significant amount of responsibility for creating a fertile soil for anti-American hatred.


WHO IS BEHIND THE ATTACKS ?

The recent attacks are most likely related to an escalating series of attacks and bombings on U.S. targets over the past 10 years, including
the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in which
hundreds were killed. This attack followed a 1996 car-bomb attack on a
U.S. barracks in Dharahan, Saudi Arabia that killed 19 Americans and a
1995 car-bomb attack on an American National Guard Training center in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and, of course, the 1993 World Trade Center
truck-bombing.

All of these attacks have been attributed to Islamic radicals based in
the Middle East and Central Asia under the rubric of a very hazy notion
of "Islamic fundamentalism." Indeed a number of people from these regions with links to certain militant Islamic groups have been arrested
and charged in some of these actions. Breathless reports of a shadowy
Islamic conspiracy against the U.S. have generated a steady stream of
cliché's about this new enemy and its hatred of the U.S., but unfortunately precious little light has been shed on understanding why this is happening and what exactly these people believe. Their enmity towards the U.S. is explained as little more than the product of a fanatical and inherently anti-Western and anti-American world view. Stephen Emerson, a so-called terrorism expert who frequently appears in the media, claims that "the hatred of the US by militant Islamic fundamentalists is not tied to any particular act or event. Rather, fundamentalists equate the mere existence of the West-its economic, political and cultural systems-as an intrinsic attack on Islam."

Any explanation of Middle Eastern violence that relies upon the notion
that Islam is an inherently violent or inherently anti-Western religion
is false and misleading. First, Islam is one of the world's largest and most diverse religions and like Christianity or Judaism there are thousands of views within Islam about the religion and also about violence and the West. Secondly, there are major differences even among explicitly Muslim militants and activists regarding these issues-some insist upon non-violent struggle and others regard violence as a legitimate tool. There is no way one can generalize about Islam or any religion for that matter.

So who are the perpetrators and what drove them to carry this horrendous act? The most likely perpetrators of these attacks are related to an extremely small and fringe network of militants whose motivations do not derive from Islam so much as from a common set of experiences and beliefs that resulted from their participation in the U.S. backed war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980's. These militants were recruited by the CIA, the Saudi Arabian and Pakistani intelligence services to fight against the Soviet Union during the 1980's. They came largely from the poor and unemployed classes or militant opposition groups from around the Middle East, including Algeria, Egypt, Palestine and elsewhere in order to wage war on behalf of the Muslim people of Afghanistan against the communist led invasion.

Among the many coordinators and financiers of this effort was a rich young Saudi named Osama Bin Laden, who was the millionaire son of a wealthy Saudi businessman with close contacts to the Saudi royal family. He was considered to be a major CIA asset in the war against the SovietUnion. After 1984, these groups started building major bases in Pakistan and Afghanistan and fought against the Soviet Union.

This network of conservative Sunni Muslim militants, who became known as
"the Afghans", also served another purpose for the U.S. and its allies in the region. Not only were they anti-Communist they were also opposed to the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran that had toppled a major ally ofthe U.S., the Shah of Iran, who had helped control the oil fields in the region under U.S. hegemony. They opposed the revolution because Iranian Islam is based on the Shiite branch of Islam that differs in important ways from the major Sunni branch of Islam. The clear aim of U.S. foreign policy was to kill two birds with one stone: turn back the Soviet Union and create a counter-weight to radical Iranian inspired threats to U.S. interests, particularly U.S. backed regimes who controlled the massive oil resources.


THE FAILURE of U.S. POLICY in the MIDDLE EAST

But this policy has now turned into a nightmare for the U.S. and has likely led to the recent attacks against the U.S. in New York and Washington D.C. After the Soviets were defeated in Afghanistan in 1989 this network became expendable to the U.S. who no longer needed thei services. In fact, the U.S. actively turned against these groups after the Gulf War when a number of these militants returned home and opposed the U.S. war against Iraq and especially the U.S. ground troops placed in Saudi Arabia on the land of the Islamic holy sites of Mecca and Madina. In the past decade there has been a vicious war of intelligence services in the region between America and its allies and militant Muslim groups. Many Egyptian Islamists believe the U.S. trained Egyptian police torture techniques like they did the Shah and his brutal Savak security police. The CIA has sent snatch squads to abduct wanted militants form Muslim countries and return them to their countries to face almost certain death or imprisonment.

The primary belief of this loose and militant network of veterans of the
Afghanistan war is that the West, led by the United States, is now waging war against Muslims around the world and that they have to defen themselves by any means necessary, including violence and terrorism. They point to a number of cases where Muslims have born the brunt of violence as evidence of this war: the genocide against Bosnian Muslims, the Russian war against Chechnya, the Indian occupation of Kashmir, the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, the UN sanctions against Iraq or the US support of brutal dictatorships in Algeria, Egypt or Saudi Arabia, for example. They claim that the US either supported the violence or failed to prevent it in all of these cases.

It should be clear that this network is only a very radical fringe of militants who have decided that they must use armed tactics to get their message out to the U.S. and others. They have been identified as the major players in the recent string of anti-U.S. bombings across the Middle East that culminated in the U.S. embassy bombings in Africa and now, possibly, the attacks directly on American soil.

They are very different from the wider current of Islamic activism in
Arab world and more globally which in addition to its Islamic orientation has an agenda about social justice and social change against the dictatorships and terrible economic conditions and extensive corruption in many of the pro-Western countries in the region. They are anti-Iranian. They are now anti-Saudi. And their actions have even been condemned by very militant Muslim organizations ranging from the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt to the FIS in Algeria to HAMAS in Palestine. They are disconnected from these movements in many ways although some sentiments are certainly shared. There is no question that the U.S. support for Israel and its support for the devastating sanctions on Iraq, as well as U.S. support for brutal dictatorships across the region, have created a fertile ground for sympathy with such militancy.

Osama bin Laden is not the mastermind of these attacks as is often claimed in the media; he just facilitates these groups and sentiments with his money and finances, as do others. He is simply a very visible symbol of this network and the U.S. obsession with him most likely works to increase his standing as an icon of resistance to the U.S.

The rise of this militant network and their adoption of violence against the United States represents a clear failure of U.S. strategy in the region, especially the U.S./Saudi/Pakistani model of alliance between conservative Sunni Islamic activism and the West. The problem is that US has no alternative political strategy because they see all Islamic activists as their enemy and refuse to address the root causes of anti-American sentiments in the region, especially support for dictatorships and rampant poverty among the majority of the region's masses of people. Just as important, the U.S appears to have no long-term strategy to address the sources of grievances that the radical groups share with vast majority of Muslim activists who abhor using violent methods that would include a more balanced approach to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, ending the sanctions on Iraq or moving U.S. military bases out of Saudi Arabia.


HOW to TRULY DEFEAT TERRORISM

Many of us accept the premise that terrorism is a phenomenon that can be defeated only by better ideas, by persuasion and, most importantly, by amelioration of the conditions that inspire it. Terrorism's best asset, in the final analysis, is the fire in the bellies of its young men. That fire cannot be extinguished by Tomahawk missiles or military operations. If intelligent Americans can accept this premise as a reasonable basis for dealing with this threat, why is it so difficult for our leaders to speak and act accordingly?

The present U.S. strategy for ending the threat of terrorism through the use of military force will very likely exacerbate these problems. When innocent U.S. citizens are killed and harmed by blasts at US embassies or bases, the U.S. government expects expressions of outrage and grief over brutal terrorism. But when U.S. Cruise missiles kill and maim innocent Sudanese, Afghanis, and Pakistanis, the U.S. calls it collateral damage. Many of the world's 1.2 billion Muslim people are understandably aggrieved by double standards. The U.S. claims that it must impose economic sanctions on certain countries that violate human rights and/or harbor weapons of mass destruction. Yet the U.S. largely ignores Muslim victims of human rights violations in Palestine, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kashmir and Chechnya. What's more, while the U.S. economy is propped up by weapon sales to countries around the globe and particularly in the Middle East, the U.S. insists on economic sanctions to prevent weapon development in Libya, Sudan, Iran and Iraq. In Iraq, the crippling economic sanctions cost the lives of 5,000 children, under age five, every month. Over one million Iraqis have died as a direct result of over a decade of sanctions. Finally, the U.S. pro-Israel policy unfairly puts higher demands on Palestinians to renounce violence than on Israelis to halt new settlements and adhere to U.N. resolutions calling for an Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian lands.

There is no justification for the horrendous attacks on innocent
American civilians in New York or Washington. Yet, at this difficult time, Americans should critically examine policies with which Arabs, Muslims and many others have legitimate grievances. Why do we refuse to see the flaws in these policies? Is it easier to demonize those in the Arab world who oppose them as a way of diverting attention from our own mistakes?

President Bush and others have labeled all Islamic militants as members or "affiliates" of the "Osama bin Laden Network of Terrorism." This is,of course, the common mistake of demonizing one individual as the root of all evil. In fact, elevating bin Laden to that status only gives him a mantle of heroism now and, more ominously, will guarantee him martyrdom if he should die. Even if he is killed or captured, the fertile soil that creates such figures will still be there. Moreover, any attacks may simply serve to inflame passions and create hosts of new volunteers to their ranks. Military solutions to the problems in the Middle East and the terrorism that has resulted from these problems is not a policy but a recipe for more violence and bombings.

We can't let Islamic radicals kill US citizens because it is there religion. We have to preserve people's lifes. The islamic radicals are the ones that attacked us because of our religion or way of life so they are the ones that are attacking people's religions and we have to stop that. Not all people of the Islam religion believe in these acts of violence so indeed we should not say that it is the fault of the entire islam race. That is not the complete reason we are attacking Iraq anyways. Saddam has killed a lot of people and supressed a lot more. The US is freeing them. And sometimes people die. It happens. The amount of casulities isn't that much right now. And the US trys to save everyone they can but sometimes mistakes happen in war and people die. If we do not get rid of Saddam he will kill 10x's more people than we will in this war.

My friend, Emily - who often teaches East Indian dance - has passed along to me these two poignant messages again reminding us that we DO NOT want more innocent people to die because our Leaders are only comfortable using violence to fix things (macho-correctness ?).

Hello buddies of mine!

You are all probably getting many e-mails about the recent
happenings in New York and Washington. Here is one more -
from my little saddened heart.

I have been talking to my students, all these little
AMERICAN (of Indian heritage descent) - 8 and 9 year olds.
"What would you do now, if I made you the president of
United States" was my question. The answers were
interesting. Yesterday one child said "I would close the
gates and not allow any of these foreigners to come into
our country." It shocked me to hear that. "What are your
mom and dad? Foreigners?" I asked. She didn't realize
that's what she was saying.

I have been facing this a lot over the 4 days. "Ramaa!
Don't wear hose salwar dresses. Afghan people dress like
that" say some Indian friends to me. "Ramaa, you should
wear a big dot on your forehead so that everyone knows that
you are a Hindu, and not one of those Muslim people" say
other Hindu pals of mine. At a time when we should unite
and feel one as Americans, we are already becoming divided,
fearing one another (and irresponsible statements made by
the likes of Jerry Falwell don't help any!). I love this
country. For 23 years this has been my home. This is my
adopted land. I brought up my children here. I have lived
longer here than in my own land of birth. I have gotten
used to the hyphenated identity of Indian American. But in
my heart, I am an American first. My children are
Americans. I feel the pain, the blood and the sorrow and
even the helplessness that many are feeling right now.
But all of a sudden, I am afraid. It scares me to hear
speeches made of the whites versus the non whites, gays
versus straight, and of course references to "those damned
foreigners".

The following two pieces of excellently written messages
came to me - the first from one of my dearest friends Don
Bondi and another sent to me by a student of mine. They
are thought provoking. I wanted to share it with all of
you. They are messages about hyphenated citizens from two
different perspectives - one from a true American (as if
there is any such thing) and another from an
Afghan-American. I think you will like it. Please feel
free to share it with all you like

To ALL Concerned - I've been thinking. During all this
tragedy I've not once heard of a hyphenated American being
killed or hurt-ONLY AMERICANS.. MAYBE it is time we all
got rid of those pejorative terms we have become accustomed
to using. MAYBE, just maybe it's OK to be called an
American period, without trying to divide our nationality
with hyphens. I remember when as a little boy and my
father was called "wob or dago," he always replied, "NO,
I"m an American." YES, I am an American. (Not
Italian-American or Irish-American BUT AMERICAN) What
are you??? AN D if this is too drastic at least let's
reverse the order- American-Italian, etc. Another memory of
the stupidity of this terminology-during the Olympics when
Kristy Yamaguchi was competing and eventually won the gold
in Japan she was always referred to as an American and
her opponent the Japanese skater was Japanese, as rightly
it should have been. Let us rethink these pejorative,
divisive, and political terms and see us ALL as Citizens
of the United States of American. That does not mean we
should ignore our heritage, but it is just that, a
heritage not where our allegiance lies. And while I'm at it
let's get rid of the phrase "Seeing grown men cry." I've
never seen or heard the term "seeing grown women cry."

Tamim is an Afghani-American writer. He is also one of
the most brilliant people I know in this life. When he
writes, I read. When he talks, I listen. Here is his take
on Afghanistan and the whole mess we are in.

Dear Gary and whoever else is on this email thread:

I've been hearing a lot of talk about "bombing Afghanistan
back to the Stone Age." Ronn Owens, on KGO Talk Radio
today, allowed that this would mean killing innocent
people, people who had nothing to do with this atrocity,
but "we're at war, we have to accept collateral damage.
What else can we do?" Minutes later I heard some TV pundit
discussing whether we "have the belly to do what must be
done."

And I thought about the issues being raised especially hard
because I am from Afghanistan, and even though I've lived
here for 35 years I've never lost track of what's going on
there. So I want to tell anyone who will listen how it all
looks from where I'm standing.

I speak as one who hates the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden.
There is no doubt in my mind that these people were
responsible for the atrocity in New York. I agree that
something must be done about those monsters. But the
Taliban and Ben Laden are not Afghanistan. They're not even
the government of Afghanistan. The Taliban are a cult of
ignorant psychotics who took over Afghanistan in 1997. Bin
Laden is a political criminal with a plan. When you think
Taliban, think Nazis. When you think Bin Laden, think
Hitler. And when you think "the people of Afghanistan"
think "the Jews in the concentration camps." It's not
only that the Afghan people had nothing to do with this
atrocity. They were the first victims of the perpetrators.
They would exult if someone would come in there, take out
the Taliban and clear out the rats nest of international
thugs holed up in their country.

Some say, why don't the Afghans rise up and overthrow the
Taliban? The answer is, they're starved, exhausted, hurt,
incapacitated, suffering. A few years ago, the United
Nations estimated that there are 500,000 disabled orphans
in Afghanistan-a country with no economy, no food. There
are millions of widows. And the Taliban has been burying
these widows alive in mass graves. The soil is littered
with land mines, the farms were all destroyed by the
Soviets. These are a few of the reasons why the Afghan
people have not overthrown the Taliban.

We come now to the question of bombing Afghanistan back to
the Stone Age. Trouble is, that's been done. The Soviets
took care of it already. Make the Afghans suffer? They're
already suffering. Level their houses? Done. Turn their
schools into piles of rubble? Done. Eradicate their
hospitals? Done. Destroy their infrastructure? Cut them
off from medicine and health care? Too late. someone
already did all that. New bombs would only stir the rubble
of earlier bombs.

Would they at least get the Taliban? Not likely. In today's
Afghanistan, only the Taliban eat, only they have the means
to move around. They'd slip away and hide. Maybe the bombs
would get some of those disabled orphans, they don't move
too fast, they don't even have wheelchairs. But flying
over Kabul and dropping bombs wouldn't really be a strike
against the criminals who did this horrific thing. Actually
it would only be making common cause with the Taliban-by
raping once again the people they've been raping all this
time. So what else is there? What can be done, then? Let
me now speak with true fear and trembling. The only way to
get Bin Laden is to go in there with ground troops. When
people speak of "having the belly to do what needs to be
done" they're thinking in terms of having the belly to
kill as many as needed. Having the belly to overcome any
moral qualms about killing innocent people. Let's pull our
heads out of the sand. What's actually on the table is
Americans dying. And not just because some Americans would
die fighting their way through Afghanistan to Bin Laden's
hideout. It's much bigger than that folks. Because to get
any troops to Afghanistan, we'd have to go through
Pakistan. Would they let us? Not likely. The conquest of
Pakistan would have to be first. Will other Muslim nations
just stand by? You see where I'm going. We're flirting with
a world war between Islam and the West. And guess what:
that's Bin Laden's program. That's exactly what he wants.
That's why he did this. Read his speeches and statements.
It's all right there. He really believes Islam would beat
the west. It might seem ridiculous, but he figures if he
can polarize the world into Islam and the West, he's got a
billion soldiers. If the west wreaks a holocaust in those
lands, that's a billion people with nothing left to lose,
that's even better from Bin Laden's point of view.

He's probably wrong, in the end the west would win,
whatever that would mean, but the war would last for years
and millions would die, not just theirs but ours. Who has
the belly for that? Bin Laden does. Anyone else?

The New Millennium (Age of Aquarius) has begun and now it is time to make
our changes and get rid of the cruel, outdated policies of nations (humanity), replacing them with New Thoughts & Actions that will lead us towards an epoch of caring and sharing. Dear Friends,

In my book HEALING THE SOUL OF AMERICA, I wrote about an experience I had in a hotel lobby in New Delhi during the mid l990’s. It resonates deeply for me today. An Egyptian diplomat, whom I met while taking a break from leading a spiritual pilgrimage to India, came up to me and gently, kindly said these words:

“I do not mean this as a criticism of the United States. I know the Americans are good men and women. But please try to make them understand: many people in my part of the world feel that they have been forced to try to keep up with you, in a race that we do not really care to run. Your technology is amazing, but America seems spiritually polluted to many of us. Your ways are not our ways, and while we were tempted for a while to think that your ways should be our ways, we do not think that anymore.

This is the problem, Ms. Williamson, and there will be terrible consequences in the world if America does not come to understand this. Islamic terrorists have had such success- if you can call their campaigns a success -- because they have been able to persuade millions of peasants that America is bad. It is not too difficult to do, Ms. Williamson. All they have to do is describe the television programs you export to this part of the world, and millions of people are very horrified. America often comes across to us as very arrogant and uncaring.

Your government does not understand. They do not see how the people feel. We need the American people to understand. Perhaps you will bring more Americans to our part of the world. If they come to understand us, then they will respect us. We would feel that respect, and then I don’t think that the terrorists would have such success. This is not a job the CIA can do. It is only a job which people can do.”

His words have rung in my ears over the last few days, and I thought that perhaps they would ring in yours. They reveal important information, which I hope we all take to heart.

Dear Friends,

In this dimension, tragedies do occur, but they neither reflect nor modify the ultimate truth of who we are. That is why those who died in this tragic situation, lost their bodies but they did not die. While the body is destructible, the spirit is not.

Therefore, when we ask “Where was God in all this?” the answer is that He was and is right here, keeping every soul safe in the palm of His hands. He did not cause these events, nor did He will them. This tragedy reflects choices made by those who had turned their hearts from love. He heals the world not by interfering with the effects of our lovelessness, but by calling us back to love.

Let’s not forget: God did not do this. People did.

I have heard people say, concerning the current crisis, that the idea of holding to love in our hearts seems to work well in terms of an individual’s life ? job, family, home etc. but that it doesn’t seem to work well on a large planetary scale.

My response to that would be: how would we know? Have we ever tried it?

The basic metaphysical law of Creation is the Law of Cause and Effect: Love brings back love, and fear brings back fear. That law holds true whether for an individual’s life, or for a collective life, and individuals are not spared the consequences of actions taken in its government’s name. Clearly, it is in our own best interest to foster compassion in the political realm. We know in our personal lives that love is a healing and reconciling
force, yet when has any government -- including our own -- ever made love an organizing principle of domestic or foreign policy?

Does love guide our government’s actions around the world? And given that the answer is so often “No,” has the fear which dominates our foreign policy created for us a world that works? Is it working now? And most painfully but perhaps most significantly of all, is it not possible that some of our own government’s behavior has not contributed in major ways to the trial that we face now?

The people who perpetrated these terrorist acts are neither rational nor sane. They are full of hate for us and for our children, and they must be dealt with in appropriate ways. But at the same time, there are millions of others ? who are not irrational, who are not insane ? who deeply resent what they perceive to be America’s arrogance and unjust attitudes when confronted by any questioning of our right to economic dominance throughout the world. While those people would not attack us as we have now been attacked, the intensity of their often valid resentments must inevitably contribute to attitudes of violence towards us.

Our President has said that we’re going to “whip those people.” The presumption is that we will find all the terrorists, route them out of the world, and then the problem will be solved. But that kind of thinking is both simplistic and dangerous at such a time as this. The President’s attitudes are like someone saying, “I know I have cancer. Just give me enough radiation and chemotherapy, operate on me and take it all out. Then I know I will be okay.”

Sadly, the case is not often that simple when it comes to cancer and it is not always that simple when it comes to politics. Every terrorist was once a child, and it was in childhood that he or she was first taught to hate. If the United States now makes its primary response to our current crisis the complete annihilation of any part of the world which has in any way conspired with terrorists, then we will contribute to the emergence of a generation of people whose numbers, and intensity of hatred toward the United States, will be even worse than what we face now. It is to be noted that if such a situation is to occur, then it will not perhaps be us ? but surely it will be our children ? who pay a terrible price for years to come.

Of course we want to DO something; it is so painful to think that there is not some one big display of power that will rid us of the horror we feel now. Yet it is our capacity to BE with that horror, and ask God if there is anything He would have us learn from it, that is the key to our deliverance, both personally and politically.

The love in our hearts is more powerful than bombs. If enough of us remember this, we will have a miracle. If we do not, God help us all.

In the beginning there was a call...

The Story of WOVA

"Call the women together!" was the statement that launched the network that is now known as Women of Vision and Action (WOVA).

Those words were voiced in 1993 by a Middle Eastern woman who had given up all hope of peace in the Middle East. In the midst of the woman's soulful story of having lost family and friends in the civil wars of her country, Rama Vernon held her hand, listened compassionately, and shared her pain. After a few minutes of silence, Rama asked the woman if there was anything that could be done to create peace. The woman said, her voice trembling with hope, "Call the women together. Perhaps it is through the women that we will find peace. Let us gather together for a day. Let us break bread, share our stories, our hearts, and our visions for peace. Let us hold the vision until it becomes a reality."

A meeting was created within two weeks and women came from all over the United States. The day was so successful that the women present wanted to duplicate it in their own regions. For two years Rama traveled throughout the United States listening to over 500 women express their vision of a peaceful world. The momentum of those gatherings led to a large conference in Washington, DC entitled, "Women of Vision: Leadership for a New World.

Eleanor LeCain, a speaker at the conference, invited women to come
together to find ways to bring the energy and ideas from the conference into the world. Several women stepped forward and were instrumental in giving birth to the ongoing network now known as Women of Vision and Action (WOVA). Among those women were Eleanor LeCain who served as WOVA's founding president, Marilyn Miller who served as Vice President, Barbara Marx-Webber who served as membership chairman and editor of WOVA's first newsletters, Patricia Ellsberg and Barbara Marx Hubbard who served on the Executive Council.

It's amazing the commonality of thought amongst the "alternative" crowd. The first thing we did on Tuesday was try to look up the Nostradamus predictions. My daughter-in-law sent me a relevant one (she said she was sent it on the internet) and Amazon.com say the Nostradamus Book has been their #1 seller since Tuesday. (the quote above).

I have absorbed a lot of info about the actual groups, leaders, and the history of the "Terrorism". Much was broadcast last week as "filler" because there were no people being "rescued" and they had to stop showing the images of destruction due to emotional overload by the public. It's a complicated story - quick synopsis: Russia vs. Afghanistan (10 years - 1 million Afghans killed/10,000+ Russians - their "Viet Nam" & key to downfall of Communism) - Osama bin Laden from RICH Saudi family comes to help Afghans - builds hospitals, buys food, gives humanitarian aid - is HERO. Islamic supporters from all neighboring countries come to fight Russia/oppressor, training is provided, with help of America (to bring down enemy Russia) including bin Laden working with CIA to train soldiers. After
victory, Russians leave & Afghanistan starts persecuting "outsiders" who helped them win (??), so they flee to other nations that are fighting "civil wars"(like Kosovo). So that's how the terrorists are linked, are well-trained/experienced, and now are all over the world. (They're like Viet Nam vets). Osama bin Laden became pissed at America when they "invaded" Saudi Arabia during Gulf War (Saudi Arabis has highly sensitive Muslim religious sites that were "contaminated" by the infidels-U.S.), even though the Saudis freely work with the U.S. There are many cult-like fundamentalist Islamic groups/cells currently in operation that act independently, yet support each other because of their common beliefs/goals. They believe the international corporate world (represented by World Trade Center Towers) is exploiting "third world countries" and spreading the politics of greed (Satan), and is thereby their true enemy.

Problem: Osama bin Laden is only the most recognized "zealot"... there are MANY individuals & small groups that can act because of their previous experience uniting to fight the Russians. In fact, one of the hijackers - Atta - actually looks like the mastermind of this operation. But because he's dead, we need to find someone else to punish.

There are several things that really scare me right now:
(1) Bush is totally inexperienced and his "Advisors" have no right to decide to declare a "world war" to retaliate for a single act of a few individuals without discussions of other options. They can only think Military-Bombs-Kill-Divine Retribution.
(2) The media is only reporting "politically correct" info, patriotic being defined by "supporting the President". Everyone is afraid to say "stop-think-you're wrong-there are other choices". The only Congresswoman to vote against supporting war now has to have bodyguards. Which leads to...
(3) Erosion of civil liberties and free speech. Destruction of the economy. Lack of Vision & true CITIZEN leadership. We are supposed to continue to be passive consumers...WE must rescue the economy by BUYING STUFF. They say we must be happy to give up "privacy" to prevent terrorists from killing again. (What about my privacy could have prevented those hijackings?) They are taking away tweezers from people at the airport. Where is the voice of reason & calm thought leading us to change the conditions that create terrorism (like lack of interest in Diplomatic relations, except for economics/corporate interests and the practice of using & supporting extremists when they fight OUR enemies)
(4) Nothing has physically changed in America, except for the Trade Center coming down with extreme loss of life. Airports were affected, but restarting was delayed for too long (confusion, lack of leadership?). All else is mental.

Now, the Congress has agreed to spend huge sums of money with little
accountability to "help". People want to "do something" to feel better &
help, but WHAT WILL REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE ?

The Sad Truth...
I'm afraid it might be too late for us to have a participatory democracy/republic in America...or anywhere in the world. I am afraid that Me, my husband, my family, my friends, and my community are now just pawns in the larger game with the "shots" being called by nameless figureheads of wealth & power (The "inner circles"). I'm afraid we have waited too long to build our organizations, have been too exclusive with our collaborations, been "too busy", didn't have enough time or money, had too many other problems to deal with, or just let it all pass by while we were "busy doing other things".

I really am afraid we have gone past the point of no return.
Now, we have to just "duck & cover"...waiting for the "bombs" to drop, while watching CNN so we'll know what's happening. How much collateral damage will WE experience?

Well, to end this cynical essay on the state of our world, I do believe one
thing for sure. WE ARE AT WAR. We ARE being Terrorized. America IS following the steps of Nazi Germany in their Hyper-patriotism, Banner-flying, lock-step, follow the leader, emotional Love of the idea of our "Pure" & Good "do no wrong" Nation-state. And we have the money & guns to prove that it is true. We are right, they are wrong.
Yadda Yadda.

We are at war. If we believe in another kind of living, of "giving Peace a Chance", of "Make Love, Not War", of protection of our civil liberties, of
realizing that if we kill innocent civilians in other contries, that it is not
okay because "we're right or the best or the richest or the biggest or our
God is the only true God". If we have quoted such grand leaders as Ghandi & Martin Luther King - what we would we say to them now about our next action?

We must become soldiers for PEACE - for a new spirit of Humanity. It's not "at our convenience" that we take action, but in spite of our incredible inconvenience. Like the rescue workers at the site of the Trade Center Towers, let us, too, rush in to work...for the alternative to war & killing. Let us love the sacrifice because this IS LIFE. The Sixties were beautiful because of the incredible awakening to the ideas of peace & harmony... planetary consciousness... honoring diversity... equal rights.... ecology... alternative energy.... healthy, natural foods....
Lately, we have just been consumers of this alternative culture, now we
must truly LIVE THESE PRINCIPLES. Hold steadfast and speak loudly & clearly. Form large, visible expressions of these ideas. Put money & time into collective actions. Conspire, educate, and love what you are doing. Let's all work together. Let's go beyond e-mail...

NEXT STEP
Conversations. Let's throw out ideas for actions - and then really do them. I think the first step is to "come out of the closet" and send our thoughts to the MEDIA in mass because our politicians will not go against the "Emperor in his New Clothes". We must be brave and become articulate. Letters to the Editor - and not just the "Liberal" press.

Greetings !

I promise to send fresh ideas with an upbeat message from now on.

As we have been out in the world doing our daily tasks, we have quietly
been "polling" the "average" citizen we meet on what they think about
our current political situation. We were surprised to find the same
theme running through everyone's mind....they do not want to go to war
- they are uncertain of the guilt of Osama bin Lauden and the focus on
him - they don't want the military to hurt the innocent people of
Afghanistan (whose world we see on tv to be bleak, at best) - and they
don't really trust our "Leaders". They are waiting.......waiting for their
future to unfold. A wife of one of the victims of the WTC stated on tv
that she doesn't want to see us take a military action. This same request
has been offerred from other families too ( just what do those polls
represent when they show a 90% "approval rating"?).

People are looking for fresh ideas and people who will speak them. I was
glad to see the House Committee on Terrorism hold firm to slowing the
passage of Ashcroft's latest legislation because it contained
unconstitutional edits. The Reuters New Agency (one of the oldest in
the world) has now refused to use the word "terrorist" to describe any
person (because it is inflamatory - assumption of guilt - etc). The White
House had to rename the "Operation to Fight World Terrorism"
because it offended many Muslims. Also, the news media is asking
piercing and direct questions since they are now well-educated as to
the politics of the middle east. More info & pictures from Afghanistan,
Pakistan, and other countries are reaching our airwaves, including
comments directly from citizens of those countries. We are all getting
smarter. Good ! Now we are becoming better Citizens.

future is a powerful deterrent to martyrdom. All we ask in return is
that they, as a people, agree to enter the civilized world. That includes
handing over terrorists in their midst.

In responding to terrorism we need to do something different.
Something unexpected..something that addresses the root of the
problem. We need to take away the well of despair, ignorance and
brutality from which the Osama bin Laden's of the world water their
gardens of terror.

Dear Friend,

It is understandable that we Americans feel an almost reflexive need
for unanimity in trying times like these. As a nation, we are rightly
consumed with responding to the terrorist attacks on September 11th.
But, at some point -- and I think we're beginning to get there -- we
need to take a long-term view even as we are reacting to the current
crisis. Really important domestic issues facing us before all of this
happened -- education, energy and the environment, health care --
still have the same dimension and consequence. But we have to
recognize that it's much more difficult to discuss and debate them in
the aftermath of Sept. 11th. Unfortunately, disagreement is sometimes
characterized as unpatriotic during times such as these and open,
thoughtful discourse is somewhat muted. The gravity of the current
situation is not lost on any of us and we all want to do what's right
to insure our national security. It is with this in mind that I felt
compelled to write you today.

A handful of determined U.S. senators, encouraged by the White House,
are arguing that national security requires the Senate to rush a
pro-oil energy bill into law. They have vowed to hold up normal Senate
business and attach the bill to every piece of legislation that comes
to the Senate floor. So far they have failed in what The Boston Globe
is calling "oil opportunism." But with President Bush, himself, now
calling for rushed passage of this disastrous bill, intense pressure
is building on Senate leaders to succumb to the emotions of the
moment. Using our national tragedy as an opportunity to advance the
narrow interests of the oil lobby would not be in the best interest of
the public. This bill, already passed by the House, would not only
open the Arctic Refuge to oil rigs, it would also pave the way for
energy companies to exploit and destroy pristine areas of Greater
Yellowstone and other gems of our natural heritage. As important, it
would do nothing to address energy security.

I'm asking for your immediate help in stopping this legislation. After
reading my letter I hope you'll take action at

Last spring, the Bush administration and some members of Congress said
we had to pass the president's oil-friendly energy bill because we
were facing the most serious energy crisis since 1973. But here we
are, a mere six months later, and the energy crisis has vanished. Due
to a slowing economy and falling demand, the prices for gasoline,
natural gas and home heating oil have plunged. Meanwhile, the
much-feared "summer of blackouts" in California never happened,
largely because consumers and businesses made dramatic cuts in energy
use by launching the most successful statewide conservation campaign
in history.

With no energy crisis to scare us with, the administration and pro-oil
senators are now promoting their "Drill the Arctic" plan under the
guise of national security and energy independence. Don't buy it. It
would take ten years to bring Arctic oil to market, and when it
arrives it would never equal more than two percent -- a mere drop in
the bucket -- of all the oil we consume each year. Our nation simply
doesn't have enough oil to drill our way to energy independence or
even to affect world oil prices.

We possess a mere 3 percent of the world's oil reserves, but we
consume fully 25 percent of the world's oil supply. We could drill the
Arctic Refuge, Greater Yellowstone, and every other wildland in
America and we'd still be importing oil, still be paying worldwide
prices for domestic oil, and still be vulnerable to wild gyrations in
price and supply. As The Atlanta Constitution put it: "Burning through
our tiny oil supply faster will not make our country more secure." I'd
go further: increasing our dependence on oil, whether that oil comes
from the Persian Gulf or the Arctic Refuge, practically guarantees
national *insecurity*. And we know that it will bring more habitat
destruction, more oil spills, more air pollution, and more global
warming. The public health implications will be devastating.

If our nation wants to declare energy independence, then we have no
choice but to reduce our appetite for oil. There's no other way. We
need to rely on smarter and cleaner ways to power our economy. We have
the technology right now to increase fuel economy standards to 40
miles per gallon. If we phased in that standard by 2012 we'd save 15
times more oil than the Arctic Refuge is likely to produce over 50
years. We could also give tax rebates for existing hybrid gas-electric
vehicles that get as much as 60 mpg. We could invest in public
transit. We could launch an "Apollo Project" to bring fuel cells and
hydrogen fuel down to earth, allowing us to begin the mass production
of vehicles that emit only water as a by-product. The list goes on and
on.

In this climate of national trauma and war, it is up to us -- the
people -- to ensure that reason prevails and our natural heritage
survives intact. The preservation of irreplaceable wildlands like the
Arctic Refuge and Greater Yellowstone is a core American value. I have
never been more appreciative of the wisdom of that value than during
these past few weeks. When we are filled with grief and unanswerable
questions it is often nature that we turn to for refuge and comfort.
In the sanctuary of a forest or the vastness of the desert or the
silence of a grassland, we can touch a timeless force larger than
ourselves and our all-too-human problems. This is where the healing
begins. Those who would sell out this natural heritage -- this
spiritual heritage -- would destroy a wellspring of American strength.
What's worse, their rush to exploit the wildness that feeds our souls
won't do a thing to solve our energy problems.

There are plenty of sensible and patriotic ways to guarantee our
nation's energy security, but destroying the Arctic Refuge is not one
of them. Please tell that to your senators. They urgently need to hear
it because the pressure is on to move this pro-oil bill to a vote in
the next few weeks. It will take you only a minute to send them an

Please Mr. Redford, regail me with your educational background which qualifies you to make such statements. Or perhaps you would be willing to share with us, the un-bias entity from which you aquire this information. It would appear to me that being as it would take approx. 10 years for the oil to get to market as you stated in your letter, the wise action would be to drill as soon as possible. Who knows what will happen in the next 10 years? If we wait and have something happens in the next 5 years that would require us to drill in the arctic, we will be forced to wait for another 10 years. Can you tell me when would be a good time to predict the a problem of this nature 10 years down the road so that we can get a handle on it before it happens?

The vehemence underlying the September 11 terrorist
attacks on the United States has left many Americans
wondering, "What did we do to them?" Our inability to
understand terrorists and their deep grudge against us is
a serious problem. Behind the physical attacks of
September
11 lies an intellectual attack--an attack on the United
States and what it stands for. Unfortunately, many
people persist in treating the conflict
as a battle against a bunch of wimps and crazy people.
Appearing recently
on Bill Maher's TV show, Politically Incorrect, I said we
should not underestimate the terrorists by calling them
cowards. The ensuing discussion created unexpected
controversy. Of course the terrorists were cowards,
angry callers and emailers informed me; only cowards
target women and children. But this argument doesn't
work here. Usually cowards pick on the vulnerable
because they don't want to risk harm to themselves. The
terrorists, however, faced certain death with apparent
equanimity. They can be likened to the Japanese
kamikazes; they are fanatics, but they aren't wimps.
Taking up the issue, TV host Bill O'Reilly said the
terrorists cannot be considered brave, because they are
insane. They expect martyrdom to be followed by
heavenly bliss, with countless nubile virgins attending to
them. Mr. O'Reill considered this belief "nuts."
I do not agree with this lunacy theory. If we released a
bunch of mental patients from an asylum, could they pull
off what the terrorists did? The terrorists were educated
people from well-off families who were exposed to the
Western way of life. They knew how to fly planes. To
dismiss them so readily is irrational and reckless.
There was a time in history when the West understood
its Islamic foe. Historian Bernard Lewis, in his book Islam
and the West (Oxford University Press, 1993), points
out that during the Crusades, the Christians and the
Muslims faced each other as familiar opponents. Both
espoused universalistic religions that made an exclusive
claim on truth. Each of them used the same term, infidel,
with the same meaning, to describe the other.
But a lot has happened since the 12th century. Western
civilization has been convulsed by massive changes,
including the Renaissance, the Reformation, the
Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution. The Islamic
world, by contrast, has seen none of these
transformations. While contemporary science is enriched
by the contributions of China and India, for example, the
contribution from the Islamic world remains negligible.
Thus, a religious civilization that has never known
separation of church and state--where democracy is
scarce, schools teach nothing but the Koran, and mullahs
order people flogged and pronounce death
sentences--confronts in the United States a very different
type of civilization. Moreover, American culture is
spreading rapidly and contagiously worldwide.
What seems to disturb these terrorists is not just that the
rest of the world wants U.S. technology, but also that the
United States is exporting its ideas: human rights and
human dignity, democratic accountability, checks and
balances, private property, and free trade.
Even more: the young people of the world are attracted
to the U.S. notion of writing the script for your own life.
See the African village boy, seemingly outside the orbit
of Western influence, who sports a Baltimore Orioles
baseball cap. Walk into a hotel in Karachi or Cairo, and
the bellhop is whistling the theme song from Titanic.
The true believers of Islam, by contrast, are on the
defensive. They know their way of life holds no appeal
outside of their religious precinct. They see that many
other cultures are attempting selective Americanization,
but they fear that this is an illusion, that bringing in
Western ideas and institutions will fundamentally
transform their society, undermining its religious and
traditional basis of authority. Islamic activists fear these
things, and in this they are completely correct.
Americans should realize that freedom is a subversive
idea. And those of us who inhabit a commercial,
technological society based on freedom of trade,
speech, and religion should understand that our system
produces a person who is very different from one
produced by Islam.
This type of person is the moral issue in this conflict. We
are under assault because of the kind of people we are,
and we are at war because we believe that our principles
and our way of life are worth defending.

I have a Muslim friend who genuinely believes that America is the most evil nation on earth. He genuinely believes that Osama bin Ladin is a freedom fighter who was not responsible for 911.
Some of the things he believes about America are the most blatant anti-American propaganda. And yet he has American friends!
As you say he is well educated with a masters degree, from a well off background and was born in the West.
This defies logic and I'm not sure how an intelligent and generous person can have such contradictory attitudes.
I am a great believer in God but I find religion a curse. Having read the Koran it does say that men will approach you under the guise of God and yet be working for satan and I can't help thinking that religion is satans way of corrupting the word of God!

Let's not tar all muslims with the same brush! I don't like people to look at me as an Aussie and think that I am a typical stereotype and I'm sure you wouldn't like it either.

As the seasons changed and the leaves started falling, Marc Herold gave up the outdoors and hunkered down with his computer. Since late October, Herold has been spending close to 12 hours a day methodically monitoring a number of Internet websites, tracking reports of civilian casualties caused by the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan.

Herold, a professor of economics and women's studies at the University of New Hampshire, told WorkingForChange that he was disturbed by the U.S. media's lack of interest in and its quick dismissal of reports of large number of civilian casualties. Herold also said "friends convinced me that since I have been putting together databases for more than thirty years, that I was the right person for the job,"

If the U.S. government refuses to count them, the mainstream media won't investigate or report on them, and if Americans aren't told or just don't care, does it mean that the thousands of civilian casualties caused by the bombing of Afghanistan haven't happened?

Herold's study, which systematically tracks civilian deaths in Afghanistan
caused by U.S. bombing raids, is remarkable as an undertaking by one
dedicated individual. That none of America's huge media organizations have bothered to take on this work is disgraceful.

Unveiled in early December, and updated regularly since then, Herold's study has been well-received by alternative media organizations, groups concerned about Bush's war on terrorism, a number of mainstream international media outlets in Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and by thousands of Internet users around the world. The media of denial -- the U.S. media -- largely ignored the study at first.

Now that the report is garnering some attention, it has been criticized or labeled "controversial" in mainstream media reports. (Instead of completely trashing someone's work, you can cast a shadow over its veracity by calling it "controversial.") A mid-January San Francisco Chronicle editorial went one step beyond "controversial" -- calling Herold's report severely flawed because it "relied heavily on hearsay and second-hand reports from unreliable sources such as the Afghan Islamic Press, which is essentially a propaganda outlet for the Taliban, as well as pro-Taliban Pakistani newspapers."

No news is good news

The U.S. government has avoided the question of civilian casualties. It's a
messy subject -- a diversion and a waste of time and energy. General Tommy Franks, the "architect" of the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan has said: "We decided early on that if we were to take each of the speculations that comes out and spend our time trying to describe the error of each speculation, we'd have little time to do anything else. And so all of us have opted to not do that."

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld prefers to put a positive spin on the U.S.'s conduct in the war: "There probably has never in the history of the world been a conflict that has been done as carefully, and with such measure, and care, and with such minimal collateral damage to buildings and
infrastructure, and with such small numbers of unintended civilian casualties."

Two questions are worth asking: Is the study an accurate accounting of civilian casualties? Does anyone in the U.S. care?

Tracking the data

Herold's "A Dossier on Civilian Victims of United States' Aerial Bombing of Afghanistan: A Comprehensive Accounting," is a meticulous compilation of reports from dozens of sources. In his conclusion to the study he speaks directly to the accuracy question: "Naturally, some might seek to dismiss parts or all of the report by attacking the sources employed. But, to do so would mean having to accuse news agencies from many countries, reporters from many countries, and newspapers from many countries of lying. We have sought to cite whenever possible multiple sources. The specific, detailed stories provided by victims, on-lookers, and refugees lend credibility."

Among the sources Herold scours regularly are British, Canadian, Australian and Indian newspapers, including The Times of India; three Pakistani dailies; the Singapore News; Afghan Islamic Press; Agence France Press; Pakistan News Service; Reuters; BBC News Online; Al Jazeera; and a variety of other sources, including the United Nations and other relief agencies.

Herold reported that 3,767 civilians were killed from October 7 to December 6; the updated numbers now stand at 4,000 to 4,100 deaths. "I think this [the numbers] really flies in the face of the message directed to the American public, which was that we had these precision-guided munitions and there would be some collateral damage, but we shouldn't worry too much about it because we have these precision-guided weapons," Herold has said.

"In fact the figure I came up with is a very, very conservative estimate," he told a radio interviewer. "I think that a much more realistic figure would be around 5,000. You know for Afghanistan, 3,700 to 5,000 is a really substantial number." Herold told WorkingForChange that if anything, he errs on the side of being conservative about his estimates of the number killed.

Negligent and derelict

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, "Dr. Herold's report received extensive coverage in the European media but almost no mention in the
American press, which has struggled with defining a role in this conflict that is patriotic but still objective. Recently, serious media have begun to look at the suffering of Afghan civilians, but the issue is so emotional that many media outlets have chosen silence."

If letters to the editor are any reflection of public opinion, it is clear that many people prefer not to think about civilian casualties in Afghanistan. And those pundits who do comment are often caught up in "war is hell" clichés. Michael Barone, longtime conservative commentator, columnist and Fox News pundit expressed this most clearly: "Civilian casualties are not news. The fact is that they accompany wars."

Why aren't Americans interested in hearing about civilian casualties? "I think that when the disaster happened there was shock, fear, confusion and anger," Herold said. "I think that there was an incredible confusion and fear and the administration played to those feelings very well in terms of galvanizing support for a revenge action. Revenge ends when the government perceives they have eliminated al Qaeda. And this will be a very long time."

What will it take for the American people to care about the number of Afghan civilian casualties? "If at some point the International Red Cross or the United Nations starts raising a fuss over the numbers of dead civilians, then things might change," Herold said. "A half-a-dozen more incidents might cause the administration trouble."

Herold says he will continue collecting and disseminating the data until the
bombing of civilians ends: "I will keep adding to the site on a regular basis, and I hope that it does become a major story. There are such gross cases of the violation of the rules of war -- little villages are getting destroyed, wiped off the face of the earth. The U.S. is bombing places over and over again that might at one time have had al Qaeda camps, but are now completely destroyed.

"It is an extermination campaign aimed at eliminating al Qaeda and the Taliban. Unfortunately, it looks like the U.S. will be moving this war on to Sudan and Somalia."

And as the war on terrorism shifts to other countries, you can count on there being more civilian casualties.

Politicians and journalists have interpreted widespread support for the military actions in Afghanistan as a significant shift in Americans' attitudes toward war. In the weeks following the massacre of September 11, Vice President Dick Cheney described the crowd's reaction to a speech he made in New York: "There wasn't a dove in the room," he said with a smile.

This isn't the first time in the post-Vietnam era that our leaders have made such pronouncements. "By God, we've kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all," President George Bush the First declared in 1991, in the wake of the Persian Gulf War.

But their words are starkly contradicted by their own actions. In every military action since Vietnam, our politicians and generals have been extremely reluctant to risk American military casualties. In the Persian Gulf War, there were more soldiers killed in training and accidents (including "friendly fire") than at the hands of enemy troops. In the war over Kosovo we did not lose even a single pilot.

The murder of thousands of civilians in the worst terrorist action ever on
American soil seems not to have changed this part of the "Vietnam syndrome" at all. The US military has fought this war, like the others, from the air. Our planes now bomb from altitudes so high that the fighters and civilians below cannot even see them.

When it came time to search the caves of Tora Bora for Osama and his friends, US officials started talking about "the right mix of incentives" (money, weapons) to get Afghans to do the job.

From the safety and calm of their armchairs and op-ed pages, pundits have
argued vehemently that American troops should take on these tasks. But this isn't likely to happen any time soon.

What our politicians fear, but nobody wants to talk about, are the political
consequences of American casualties. This is not because Americans are lacking in courage; as the heroic actions of the firefighters and others at the site of the World Trade Center showed, there is no shortage of people who are willing to risk their lives for the sake of their fellow citizens.

But since Vietnam, there has been a widespread mistrust of American foreign policy. During the war, we were told that we were helping the Vietnamese -- saving them and the world from communism. This turned out to be a huge lie, with terrible consequences. Millions discovered that the United States was really fighting a dirty colonial war that the French had abandoned.

Recent revelations have only reinforced this mistrust, as well as the worst picture imaginable of that war: the atrocities committed by former Senator Bob Kerrey, for example, or historian Michael Beschloss's analysis of President Lyndon Johnson's tapes, showing that he knew as early as 1965 that the war in Vietnam could not be won -- yet continued to send tens of thousands of Americans to die there.

In the post-Vietnam era, Washington has mainly contracted out the dirty work -- mass murder in Guatemala and El Salvador, or trying to overthrow the government of Nicaragua in the 1980s. But whether the US military was directly involved -- as it was in the invasions of Grenada and Panama, the Persian Gulf War and Kosovo -- or not, it is a sordid record. In general, US officials lied about the purpose of their interventions, and none of them had much to do with US national security.

For these reasons, public support for the "War on Terrorism" is miles wide but only an inch deep. Our political leaders want to use this crusade the way they used the "War Against Communism," and more recently, the "War on Drugs" in Colombia: as an excuse for the violence and brutality that are necessary to police a worldwide empire.

It remains to be seen how much of this they can get away with, or whether they will expand the current war to countries such as Iraq, Somalia, Iran or elsewhere. But they know one thing very well: they cannot allow the US casualty count to rise very high before people begin to question their motives.

This "Vietnam syndrome" will not be reversed. It is a permanent change in
American consciousness, like those that followed the abolition of slavery or the victories -- however partial and incomplete -- of the civil rights movement. What will fade, eventually, is our leaders' addiction to empire. But when that goes, America will not have much need for foreign military adventures.

In the past several weeks the conflict between Israel and
Palestinians has worsened considerably. Israel responded to
brutal attacks by Hamas in early December with a new policy
of aggressive incursions into Palestinian land and has
challenged the Palestinian Authority?s sovereignty by
attacking its most important institutions. Israel feels it
is acting in the interest of self-preservation, while
Palestinians feel Israel is acting to perpetuate its 35-year
old military occupation. How can we, as concerned members of
the international community, effectively support a peaceful
resolution to this conflict?

The issue matters globally now, because:

- Militant Muslim groups including al-Queda have used
Israeli abuses of power and U.S. aid to Israel as a
rallying cry to gain support for their terrorist agendas.

- The United States is a major financial backer of both
parties, particularly Israel, which positions the U.S. to
play a uniquely important role in addressing this conflict
if it so chooses.

- Human Rights Watch and other organizations have noted
serious human rights abuses by both the Israeli Military and
the Palestinian Authority.

Language Of The Middle East

Many Americans are confused and misled about the facts of the Middle East because they don't understand the language of Israeli propaganda.

A terrorist is any Palestinian who wants to end the Israeli occupation. A militant is anyone the Israelis kill. If they shoot you, you are, by definition, a militant, even if you're only 6 months old or 10 years old or 80 years old. The Israelis never kill anybody but militants, so all of the more than 70 Palestinian children 15 and younger shot dead by Israeli soldiers are militants. Most civilized countries don't think militancy is a capital offense.

Unfortunately, members of the press often adopt the language of propaganda. They report that the Israelis have killed 20 militants. In fact, they don't know that. They themselves have never seen the 20 dead people. For all they know, they might be Palestinian nuns or pacifists. A good reporter will just report what he knows: The Israelis say they have killed 20 Palestinians.

Recently, one of the Fox Network's foxy blondes belligerently demanded of a Palestinian spokesman why Yasser Arafat had not made a speech in Arabic demanding an end to terror. When the Palestinian finally got a chance to talk, he told her what everybody who follows the Middle East already knows: Arafat has condemned terrorism in speeches made in Arabic. The spokesman even gave the blond cutie two specific dates and occasions.

But what's important to us, as consumers of this bilge on television, is this: I think it is a most safe assumption that the lady, ordinarily quite pleasant and giggly, does not speak Arabic, does not understand spoken Arabic and does not monitor radio and television broadcasts in Arabic. So the question is, how would she know whether Arafat had ever made a speech in Arabic on any subject? The answer is that she doesn't, yet she adamantly and obnoxiously asserted that he had not condemned suicide bombings in Arabic. Where did she get that information? >From Israeli propaganda.

It could be that these younger folks who are in-studio types are just naive. Perhaps I can help them. All governments lie. Some governments lie on some occasions, some lie on many occasions, and some lie on all occasions. The Israeli government is a world-class liar. You can count on almost anything it says as being all false, or partly true and partly false, or true but out of context.

The members of the Israeli government are also the most self-centered people on earth. To them it is unacceptable for any Israeli to die, but perfectly OK if any number of Palestinians die. How little value they place on Palestinian life is illustrated by a sentence an Israeli court gave a Jewish settler. His sentence was a fine and community service. What was his crime? He had knocked down a 10-year-old Palestinian boy, put his booted foot on the child's neck and beaten him to death with the butt of his military pistol. But as one of the right-wing rabbis is now saying openly, a Jewish life is more valuable than a gentile life.

President Bush, perhaps the most naive American, wants everyone to call suicide bombers murderers. I won't. They are martyrs. Those young Palestinians have done exactly the same thing so many young Americans have done - willingly sacrificed their lives for their country's freedom. If they are murderers because they kill civilians during a war, then Mr. Bush's own father is a mass murderer. His war and his embargo have murdered tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children in Iraq. Young Bush is apparently planning to murder more.To paraphrase the killer in the movie "Unforgiven," "We are all murderers, kid."

The irony is that while Bush keeps yapping at Arafat to stop the violence, Bush himself refuses to stop the much greater violence inflicted on the Palestinian people by Israel. In case he hasn't noticed, there are, to use his favorite phrase, innocent men, women and children dying in the occupied territories because of Israeli state terrorism practically every day.

Instead of playing self-righteous semantic games, Bush should devote his energy to stopping the killing by everybody, including us. He should strongly support freedom for the Palestinians. That's the only way the Israelis will ever have security. And he should abandon the idea that the way to stop killing is to kill.

In my opinion, there is something very karmic [cause & effect] about the World Trade Center Crisis, as our Dear Sacred Mother Earth cries out that she cannot take much more of the nonsense. She loves us, but she is still hurting as our United States Government Administration continues to authorize and condone a ?trigger happy? military killing many innocent victims around the World, authorizing destruction of the environment, and contaminating the soil. This has to stop immediately to have real peace! Other countries also have to learn how to get along without exchanging bullets, bombs, missiles, and other weapons of destruction. Also our people need to realize that every other plant and animal has just as much a right to grow as they do. Ask permission before taking. First of all, I'd like to post my respects to all the firefighters who gave their lives to save others in a time of need. These cowardly acts will not go unpunished. The sinister monsters will be found and obliterated swift and immediately. I'm sick of these pacifists who don't want to target Iraq because we may cause civilian deaths and that we should use diplomats to calm the Iraqi controversy. If we had not retaliated in WWII, we would all be speaking either Italian, German, or Japanese right now. As the Japanese general who ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor said "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant" so have the Islamic extremists. And with this last quote, I give thanks to the people who dedicate their lives to protect me, my country, the idea of freedom."And the two brothers shall rise again, more strong and beautiful than before" in reference to thw Twin Towers.

Companies producing microchip cards explain in their advertising campaigns, that these are much better than the cash, because people do not have to care for having enough money, coins etc. ATTENTION! THIS IS JUST A TRAP! Once the microchip cards will become so common, that they totally displace the cash in the market, they will become THE EXCLUSIVE MEAN OF EXCHANGE. However this will only be valid, until they will be replaced by the final solution: MICROCHIPS IN THE MAN’S BODY, implanted usually under the skin on the hand or on the forehead.

Publicist Alan Pilote expresses this warning in the French periodic Vers Demian and he further discusses the problem of microchips and the MAN’S FREEDOM.

The cards with microchips will lead to the control over every person in the world. They will represent the last phase before the MICROCHIP IMPLANTATION on the body under the skin, the ”beast” mark. Without this sign it will be impossible to sell or buy anything. If everything will continue according to the plan of the international financial magnates (the main controlling agents of the negative status on the planet Earth – remark of the editor), cash, i.e. notes and coins will totally disappear in a relatively short period from the market. This is not a fantasy! This technology has been already tested on animals many times and it appears that everything is prepared to its accomplishment directly on a man. Why are the financial bosses of the world so interested in this system? Because IT ALLOWS TO ESTABLISH A TOTAL CONTROL OVER THE PEOPLE! These financial bosses (puppets of the saurians - remark of the editor), blinded by THEIR POWER-CONSCIOUSNESS, are convinced, that ONLY THEY ARE ABLE TO LEAD THE MANKIND IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. They are aware of the fact that people will not be willing to give-up the possibility to trade in cash just easily. However in the situation of the threat of the worldwide financial crash, the financial bosses will be able to convince people, that the only possibility which will rescue them from loosing everything, is the MICROCHIP.

How does the microchip for implantation look like? Unlike the credit cards, no personal code is needed, no confirmation about the cash balance from the bank. Microchip cards containing electronic information, immediately provide all requested data, they can store by 500 more information than the current cards. The leading company producing microchip cards is Mondex. Half of its shares is owned by MasterCard. Using these cards it is possible to transmit information by the Mondex telephone machines or by specially equipped computer. Mondex microchip cards are already used in 20 countries and it is expected that the European union will apply this system in combination with the common currency introduction.

It is already possible to use a personal computer as a ”bank counter”, allowing to perform all requested financial transactions directly using the screen. Microsoft announced recently, that since 1999 all computers will be equipped by the tools for using microchip cards.

However because microchip cards can be stolen, damaged or lost, people will be SUGGESTIVELY CONVINCED, that the IMPLANTATION of such a MICROCHIP will be much more practical and better. The microchip will not be in the plastic card any more, but it will be implanted directly ON THE MAN’S BODY. It will not be used for financial purposes only, but at the same time for IDENTIFICATION OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL PERSON. For example using the satellite or antenna transmission devices, it will always be under control, WHERE any person is at this particular moment. Something similar is already planned to be implemented in some European towns for the mandatory registration of the dogs. The official reasoning is a possibility to easily find the lost or strayed animal, in reality the town officials want to make sure that nobody can escape from paying fees for the dog.

For the implantation under the man’s skin many microchips were produced. Their size is from 5 to 7 mm in length and 0.75 mm in breadth, this can be approximately compared to a rice grain. In the microchip the following main information are stored: NAME OF THE PERSON, PICTURE OF HIS/HER FACE, INSURANCE NUMBER AND CODE, FINGERPRINT, PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION, FAMILY GENEALOGY, ADDRESS, JOB POSITION AND THE EXCERPT FROM THE CRIME REGISTER. The card can store up to 34 BILLIONS COMBINATIONS, so IT CAN IDENTIFY EVERY INDIVIDUAL TERRESTRIAL. It means, that such a microchip will replace all other current identification documents (identity card, insurance certificate and many others). The person not having such a document on him/her, would not be able to buy anything, but more than this – he/she could not receive salary, pension, manipulate with the money in the bank, travel etc.

Microchip is equipped by auto-charging lithium battery. The requirement to give a signal whenever the temperature of the man’s body changes led to a expensive research with the aim to identify the most appropriate position on the man’s body for the microchip placement. Two places were identified – on the forehead close to the hair and on the ridge of the right hand. This fact reminds us strongly about the passage from the Saint John’s Revelation:

”And (the beast) will force everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name (666).”

So far it was not possible to understand this Saint John’s forecast. Now with the microchip implanted under the skin it is already possible! At first glance such a microchip on the hand can be seen as a big simplification, as a big advantage for everyone. However as Saint John writes in the Revelation, a man to be able to receive the mark has to give up Christ and swear the loyalty to the Anti-Christ (pseudo-creators – remark of the editor). And what is represented by Christ? Of course, the MAIN COSMIC AND NATURAL RULES and part of them is also the FREEDOM, which the individual will for sure LOOSE in the subordination to the human ruling and grasping power.

Microchips will be through the satellite or antenna transmission devices connected to the CENTRAL COMPUTER with gigantic memory. There is a computer working already for more than 10 years in Brussels, which is able to register 2 billions numerical data. It is likely that this computer is being equipped and prepared to store data about people associated with various industries. Even bigger ”computer storage” has a super-computer in Luxembourg. This computer is able to store and utilize information about all inhabitants of the Earth.

It appears that under conditions described above the GENERAL ”CONNECTION” OF THE EARTH’S INHABITANTS TO THE COMPUTER MEMORY will be done, which in principle is already the ORWELL’S TOTALITARIANISM. Selected individuals will be able to immediately block the bank account of any person, stop him/her using the phone, travelling or buying the travel ticket etc. We can hardly imagine what would happen in case of the central computer breakdown. And on top of it, what is most important, it is just a step from here to CONTROL OF PEOPLE FROM ANY POINT OF VIEW - based on their behavior or their stay in a particular location. It can ultimately lead to the monitoring of their psychical reactions, so in principle to THE CONTROL OF THEIR THOUGHTS.

AGAINST MICROCHIP TOTALITY

Dear people,

There's time to announce you YOUR SITUATION and POSITION within PUPPET SYSTEM. It's enough of hebetating people by scientists, clerks and other outer structures.

PART OF THE MEN IS WORKING HARD ON MICROCHIP CONTROL SYSTEM TO ALL THE PEOPLE ON THE PLANET EARTH. This system will stand for the entire loss of remaining liberties the people contemporary have in case of realization. Men who are working on this, living in total ignorance from the view of incidence - spiritual impact, what this will mean for fundamental human rights. The Microchips are parts of computerized net via microwaves like cell phones !

The men control system is created gradually and unobtrusively to avoid any human protest. And it is in action now. An unification of the State Administration (EU at present), currency union (EURO), implementation of universal chip ID (health or driving license) cards are concerned in the Czech Republic (CR) until 2005. In the CR there are smaller systems in operation already - for city bus traffic (Frydek-Mistek, Znojmo, Breclav), trains (now Z-cards for practice), cars (implementation of a special cameras for scanning license numbers under the pretence of autumn NATO summit), health service (in Litomerice county). In the area of employment it is built in part of an ISO 9000 system whereof systems will likewise good serve in human control. The next are the mobile communication, internet and Mobile Internet (in set-up). Then banking system (charge and credit cards-cashomats-shops). The loss of liberties means a great chances for part of men EASILY and EFFECTIVELY operate with all precise personal data (inclusive personal movement - the building entrances and long distance scanning in free landscape - the wire in card is enough), thus misuse personal infos for massive muman control - knifing them of energy opposite their will.

ONCE THE PEOPLE COME to this system, they cannot get back to the authentic one.

There is no any technical not even ethical - spiritual guarantee - of improper use. Yet nowadays there are 180 000 daily hits into police database in CR which includes just a fragment of data prepared at disposal. IN ADDITION: all the health data, biometrics - fingerprint, IRIS of eye, personal photo, employment data (both past and actual detailed motion), financial and holding data (property and effects), MOVEMENT of persons, city traffic, buses, trains, cars. The database entries cannot be effectively protected from misuse by the lots of negative people.

The system construction in the CR (and everywhere) beneath twelve year presidency of Vaclav Havel means absolute MISUNDERSTANDING and FAILURE. Neither him or state officials HAVING NOT in their programmes an increasing quality of life of the people - i.e. decreasing of gaved work to the society to a necessary level to have more time on good-class life. Thereat the economic standard allows reduce workload of men. As regards so-called office for security of personal data, it is powerless already today concerning abuse of personal data (personal database diffusion among firms and their illegal activities, etc.) Overwhelming majority of employers takes interest to keep maximum of employee energy using all possible resources. The information technology will raise these possibilities to the peak ! This procedure does not ensure the higher standard of living for people but exactly other way round this will make puppets and slaves !

Dear people, this is up to you now, whether you will just WATCH or even PARTICIPATE in construction an orwellian totality. Or else you can lawfully help to stop from human control system by your voice in petition. Sense with your heart !

Everyone who will do nothing against this system, will try it on his own to learn what he prepared himself by negative - inactive, backward and irresolute position. It will be worser than animal life. No one will get off this planetary human control system on the Earth. The events from 11th September 2002 are the instruments.

The Bible - St. John’s Apocalypse contains this information as well in Revelation 13:16-18:

I would like to take some time and remind everyone in the U.S. exactly how ignorant of the real facts they are. Terrorism is not new. What happened on September 11th 2001 is not new. The only reason such a drama has been made is because of where it happened - America. Of course, my heart goes out to all the people who have lost members of their family, and their friends. However, let's not forget the reality. Every day, there are innocent afghani people, oppressed by the Taliban regime, who are bombed almost incessantly. Their towns are ruined, but they carry on because they have no other choice. Let's not point the blame at these people, nor at the religion of Islam. As often happens, religion has been twisted to suit the means and aims of the Taliban. Also, England and Ireland have been the victim of terrorist attacks for many years, and yet little focus has been made to those who have lost their lives (this would probably be far more than those of 9/11 as there has been decades of attacks). It seems to me that many Americans need to open their eyes. You are not the only victims, and you only want to end terrorism because you have been affected, otherwise you wouldn't care.
Plus, starting a war would be terrible if only because Americans are incapable of hitting a target (I know that bombing the red cross buildings must have been a mistake - a large red cross can be so hard not to notice).

This analysis on Muslims/Islam has been done after thorough understanding of the religion, its history, and various scriptures and writings. This should throw a lot of light on what our country(USA)and other developed and hardworking peace loving democratic nations are facing today.

WHY ISLAM WILL DESTROY THIS WORLD PEACE? DESTROY IT BEFORE IT DESTROYS NON-MUSLIMS!

Make no mistake. The World Trade Center bombing has nothing to with the foreign policies of the US. All Muslims want is an excuse. They always need an enemy, because they hate peace. They want to kill, destroy, rape, plunder. All they need is an excuse. At present, this excuse is the USA. Suppose if America changed its foreign policies tomorrow and stopped assisting Israel. Make no mistake, Muslims would in a second find out a new excuse for spreading hatred and terror. How about these excuses:
1) Why are Britain, France and Italy not declared Islamic states ?
2) Muslims are illiterate, but still why are they not getting all the jobs ?
3) Why are they not being allowed to freely kill and maim Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists ? It's their birth right to kill non-Muslims, right ? Isn't that what Koran says, kill all non-believers ?

Make no mistake. Islam is the faith of the barbarians. Islam is ther other name of hatred, curse, illiteracy, trouble, poverty, madness. Islam is the biggest curse on earth. It must be destroyed.

But then why must Islam be destroyed ? Can't we find a workaround ? No, you can't. Here is why. How do you think you will deal with mad men with bombs ? By reasoning with them ? No. You kill them. Now you may think that just killing the few mad ones is enough. Wrong again. Didn't you know that Islam preaches polygamy of men ? Didn't you know that Muslims claim birth control and family planning are un-Islamic ? Didn't you know that every Muslim on average has 20 children, regardless of whether he can feed them (generally he can't) or not ?

Well, now you know. So you see, even if you kill 5 madmen, Muslims grow like insects. You kill 10, they breed 1000 more. How long can you keep going ?

So, what's the solution ? Simple, kill them all. Destroy them. Destroy their religion. Don't let them hide. Don't let them sleep. Don't sell anything to them. Don't buy anything from them. Make them starve. Make sure they cannot get out of their home. Attack them everywhere. Don't stop until there is not a single Muslim left in your country.

Muslims are worse than dogs. At least dogs have loyalty. Muslims don't. They destroy the same country that feeds them. Take this:

Show no compassion. It's us or them. We will win.

We are all pawns in the very large game that Islam plays. Recently an Islamic organisation has declared that their aim is to convert France to an Islamic state by 2007. The target date for Britain is 2012. They plan to achieve this by mass-immigration, infiltration, conversion, polygamy and high birth rate. Now USA may also be in their list after Septermber 11,2001 attack which was very transperant from Osam Bin Laden's most recent audio tape that "America should embrace Islam."

The pattern is very similar everywhere. First one Muslim comes from some Muslim country to your Democratic Free nation/town and buys a house. Then suddenly you notice that he has brought 20 relatives from his country. You think no more of it, because relatives can always come as tourists. Then suddenly after 6 months you notice that none of the relatives has left your country, instead the first Muslim has bought two adjacent houses. Within a year, each of the people who arrived earlier brings in more and more friends, relatives and even unknown people and buys more properties in adjacent areas. If they cannot enter your country legally (because they cannot get a work permit), there is a variety of ways they get in. One of the Muslims who has a job or business can declare that he’d support the new immigrants. If that does not work, they claim that they need asylum. Of the Muslims who seek asylum, all are phoney.

If they can’t get in as asylum-seekers either, they employ various so-called human rights agencies to start a hue and cry on their behalf. This generally works, as the government of the country bends over backwards to sound politically correct. It is no wonder that all these so-called human rights agencies are run by failed communists. Do you see the pattern ?

In 2 years, you discover that all houses in one whole block belong to Muslims. Then the whole area becomes a Muslim area. Within five years, the whole town is infested with Muslims, there are more Mosques than churches or temples, there are separate schools for Muslims where they are taught about religion and nothing else.

Once the second generation of these Muslims are grown up, they become absolutely unemployable, because all along they were taught only about Islam, jihad, how to kill non-Muslims and so on. They have no relationship with the country of domicile or its people.

These is where the next phase of their Big Game starts. In all mosques the preachers incite the youth about the perceived discrimination of the host country. They incite the youth to take up arms and fight for justice.

Finally they demand separate Islamic nationhood.

What started with just one Muslim in one small town, ended up in full-scale riot, arson, terrorism and finally partition of a country. That’s how it works. Muslims believe in converting the world into Islam. Every single Muslim works as a pawn in this Big Game. But the machinery works perfectly. It has worked in France, Italy, Britain, the US, China, India, the CIS and elsewhere. Every single Muslim is an active party in this sinister game.

So to summarise, the pattern is:
1. Get into a country by any means,
2. Bring everybody from your country,
3. Buy properties and acquire more and more areas,
4. Acquire entire towns and cities,
5. Establish mosques and medieval teaching centres everywhere, .Target the Black community in Jails/other places to convert them to Islam to use them to fight for religious cause.
6. Instigate riots with indigenous people, allege discrimination, enforce areas where indigenous people are banned from entering,
7. Involve communist intellectuals at all stages to shout for you,
8. Start campaigning for separate Muslim nationhood by carving out a part of the host country,
9. Finally start terrorist movements in the host country.

What the free world must do:
1. Don’t let a single more Muslims enter your democratic free prosperous country on any excuse whatsoever,
2. Keep a close watch on the billions of Muslims already infesting your cities and towns,
3. Demolish all the Islamic religious schools,
4. Boycott all Muslim businesses,
5. Boycott Muslims socially (this should be easy, because Muslims are social outcasts in all host countries anyway)
6. Actively resist Muslims from getting any job in private enterprises (this also should not be difficult, as they are generally uneducated and unemployable),
7. Create pressurise on the government of your country not to allow Muslim representation at any level of the administration,
8. Actively campaign all the time, keep up the vigil.

Remember, under the hood, they hate all non-Muslims, they believe that killing non-Muslims is good, they believe in destroying your country to build up the universal Islamic nation.

Remember, the history of Islam is just a long story soaked in the blood of innocent people. In the middle ages they invaded countries after countries, robbed and plundered innocent people and converted everybody to Islam at the point of the sword. They did everything to crush the religions of the indigenous people. They were very close to reach their ultimate goal: making it a Muslim world.

Don’t let them get away with it any more.

We have won the Cold War. We will win this one too. Let’s fight till the end. DEMOCRACY WILL PREVAIL!

I wish I didn't agree with this post but after watching and reading about the numerous beheadings of innocnet people carried out by Islamic terrorists, I find my growing hatred for them increasingly difficult to suppress. When they behead their victims, it's not just one quick blow. Several of them hold the inconceivably unfortunate human being down while one of them begins sawing at the neck with a knife. After about 20 seconds the vocal cords are severed and the screaming stops but the knife is only half way through and the head is pulled back and twisted around until it finally rips free. Why should anyone who is capable of such an act be allowed to live?

The author of the previous post is also correct about the history of Islam. The violent, primitive religion of Islam was created by a merchant named Mohammad around 600 AD. Its goal then was to invade and dominate the western world; why would it be any different now. I may be wrong but from what I've heard, Islam basically teaches the opposite of Christianity. Where Jesus taught his followers to turn the other cheek when slapped, Islam teaches to slap the other person back three times. Which method seems more enlighteded? What fool would accept a religion that teaches such childish stupidity?

Unfortunately, to kill them all would be to act as they do and that would be more of a victory for them than slaughtering every other human on the face of the earth. I believe that Jesus said to "turn the other cheek" because he knew that this world and what happens to us in it is ultimately insignificant. Its how we react to what happens to us that is important and reacting like rabid animals is not the way to live up to our potential.

They will have no problem rounding up Americans since they are not from this country!! Then it is off to the already established FEMA camps all across the U.S. and to illiminate the Americans on the Red, Blue, and Green lists!!

The celebrity group is part of a larger coalition called Win Without War that will officially begin on Wednesday. Backed by national religious and civic organizations, including the National Council of Churches, the N.A.A.C.P., the National Organization for Women and the Sierra Club, organizers said the group's purpose was to emphasize what they called a mainstreaming of the antiwar movement.

"We are patriotic Americans who share President Bush's belief that Saddam Hussein's Iraq cannot be allowed to acquire weapons of mass destruction," reads the coalition's political mission statement. "We part ways with the president, however, on the issue of pre-emptive military attack against Iraq."

One of the founding organizations, MoveOn.Org, started an online signature campaign a week ago titled "Let the Inspections Work." Within days, it gathered more than 175,000 signatures and over $300,000 in donations to buy antiwar advertisements in national media outlets.

To say that extremists hate America because of our diversity, or because they are jealous of our wealth is just burying our head in the sand and taking a stance of superiority! In my view Muslim extremists hate the U.S. because of our constant interference in their regions and because of our arrogance - our continuing view of Manifest Destiny, that God is "Our" God, and on our side, we are the "Best" and therefore can do what we want, including bringing our politics and culture to nations that either don't want it or aren't ready for it. It isn't American's that they hate, it's our government and it's intrusive policy.

Extremists are members of every religion, even Christianity; Timothy McVey, those that kill doctors and bomb abortion clinics, people who openly state they approve of locking up all Muslims without due process, who would prefer to deploy our troops in the Near and Middle East, even Jerry Falwell, all are extremists who would use hate as a weapon against those that are different from themselves.

The President is now giving school vouchers to fund religious education's with public money. There are messages all over the news and the internet from the religious right regarding our country being founded on Christianity, stating that therefore we should reinstate prayer in school, force children to recite the Pledge of Allegiance etc. If this "War on terrorism" is indeed a war on religious totalitarianism as I believe it is (in part), we should then first remove the speck from our own eye!

Terrorism is a tool used by those that haven't an army sufficient to fight an army that does. Palestinians use terrorism, just as other poor nations do.... this is the only weapon in their arsenal. Have we learned nothing from the continuing struggle in Israel, that to fight terror with retaliation will only lead to more bloodshed? This conflict can only be ended with a true understanding and acceptance of one another, an end to the superior stance of our nation and its citizens.

We have a moral assignment as citizens of the richest, most capable and innovative society history has ever seen. With good old American know how we could and should attack things like poverty and Aids, not poor nations for their resources, and then mask our activities under the guise of routing out terrorism!

Unfortunately, I fear that this cannot happen with the current political climate, if ever. Our citizens and administration are far too sure that we are the best, that Christianity is the only path to salvation, that we have nothing to learn from other nations failures and successes. Those issues combined give us the right to do as we please abroad, Manifest Destiny. With this attitude, and that of terrorists who have the same beliefs about their own faith and country, we are headed to a place that I'm afraid we have never seen before.

Let us all work together with one voice, loud enough to be heard in our nations capitol and around the world. Let us vote.... hopefully one day more level heads will prevail!

Flowers of peace to Islam.

On the 27th of January, representatives of the United Nations will report on the weapons inspection in Iraq. America and Britain are hoping to lead an attack on Iraq following this date.
I ask that this be the day for you to give a flower to Islam as a symbol of peace and to demonstrate that you do not support this intention of mass violence on Iraq.
Either lay flowers at the gate of a mosque in your area or give a flower to a Muslim.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United States would hold Iraq's oilfields "in trust" for the Iraqi people.

Trust? What an amusing choice of words. The Iraqi people do not want Americans to kill them in order to hold the oil "in trust". It's their oil. They have no choice. Men with guns will come to sieze the oil.

It's like breaking into somebody's home and saying you will hold their posessions "in trust".

American troops will sieze oilfields and kill innocent people in the process.

This is armed robbery on a grand scale.

First of all there is G.W. Bush, his position at the moment being president of the United States of America; but, there are also various other powerful in states, like Joschka Fischer in Germany, Toni Blair in England, Saddam Husain in Iraq, Sharon in Israel, Arafat in Palestine and other powerful and all their followers in governments and peoples. Yet, there are also the religious-fundamental, fanatical and insane terrorists of all kinds as well as lone wolves. Overall, all of them have one thing in common, they bring death and ruin to mankind, and immense destruction to the world or a least advocate it, when they are not directly involved.
In this world at this time, US-President G.W. Bush is the most dangerous, biggest and most powerful warmongering figure among the various and powerful of different countries, as for instance England and Germany, which take up an extraordinary submissive position and agree with the war-waging howling American, G.W. Bush, who, with the agreement of the so-called "World Peace Organisation", U.N., wants to start a war with Iraq. This war could result in terrible consequences, and mankind and its planets could be plunged into an immense catastrophe, whereby uncountable human lives could simply be wiped out. Basically, a single man with the name of G.W. Bush has unleashed all this. Thus, one has to ask oneself what he understands under responsibility for mankind and for his people of which he will unscrupulously send thousands, man and woman soldiers, into a battle, which is more than questionable, and many will lose their lives on the American, as well as on the other side of the so-called enemy. In fact, how power-hungry, irresponsible, fearful and cowardly must a human being be, when he accepts the death of human beings through naked force, and thoughtlessly destroys human achievements through his decree and that of his cohorts, or carries out all the evils and inhumanity himself as is done by loners and terrorists working in groups? Yet, he who is a warmonger and unleashes war as the mighty and powerful and overbearing high-handed statesman G.W. Bush and all the powerful of all those countries who sing the same tune, and let their blood-thirsty war-cry sound in all shades of evil - never has the right to claim or hold a position of power. Their only aim is to engage other countries into wars, to spread themselves out as if they owned everything, as well as spreading death, depravity and destruction. However, also jointly responsible are all the warmongers pleading, sparking or advocating the war and howling along, even when they themselves do not want to participate directly as this for instance - at least recently - is the case with Germany and England. This also includes all those people who support the war and howl with the warmongering wolves. Moreover, all of the guilty, fearful and cowardly warmongering powerful and mighty at the head of state as well as uninformed stupid citizens in bondage with them are never in the position to take responsibility for their criminal actions against mankind. Many of them lack the consciousness for responsibility, common sense and the necessary mind and reason and required intelligence, to even recognize the catastrophic consequences in the end to their advocating for war, sparking war and leading war. And human beings who lack these characteristic features, should neither be voted into government by the people, nor be tolerated, when they, with presumptuousness appoint or nominate themselves into office or a position of power. All those people who are slaves to such unfit warmongers, and those who dull the senses of the people, as well as being in league with unscrupulous elements who sacrifice people in the end, screaming yes and hurray to each political, sectarian or military degeneration and vile deed, and join the chorus of blood-thirsty human beings should be made accountable for their actions through responsible and reasonable thinking people.

Force breeds force, war breeds war, terror breeds terror. That must finally be clear and understood by the human beings of Earth. Therefore, the warmongering, powerful and mighty in state must be removed and should not even be voted into high positions. G.W. Bush also does not belong into the powerful position, which was played his way unscrupulously and irresponsibly by some of the people of the USA. His aim is to abuse the power for his warmongering and exercising of power. Whereby he disregards and ignores all those pleading and reasonable voices of the people who resist and speak out against all warmongering, all terror as well as death penalty, like billions of reasonable and truly peace-loving human beings around the world do. Yet, they are not listened to by the guilty responsible and powerful, because they in fact will step over dead bodies of women, children and men as well as destroy achievements of human beings, gained in hard and laborious work. Human beings in powerful positions of governments, who practise terror, have to be removed in a responsible manner by the people. All this insanity can only be stopped then, when mankind stands jointly together, learns and respects the laws of life and only lets human beings be in government and positions of power who do not intend to bring their power and high-handedness, overbearing as well as greed for profit into play, but who in fact work for the people in a selfless, unpretentious and virtuous manner and with goodness of heart generate goodness of heart, and by peace generate peace and by true freedom generate true freedom. To reach this aim, people have to vote human beings into the highest positions who, through their effort prove solely to care for the welfare of the people and each single human being, and govern without greed for power and money.

MASS OUTBREAK OF PRONOIA

I was lucky enough to wander into a mass outbreak of PRONOIA*
on the night of January 31. To the casual observer, it was a
musical fundraiser for Not In Our Name at the Berkeley
Community Theater. But to anyone hungry for rowdy blessings,
sacred uproars, and lusty compassion, the event was dramatic
evidence that a gorgeous new world is birthing itself amidst the
dank chaos of the dying civilization.

About 3,000 poems disguised as people attended this Pep Rally
for Pronoia. While there was plenty of creative anger expressed
at the American government's dishonest and immoral rush
towards war against Iraq, the predominant mood was embodied in
the buoyant dance groove laid down by Michael Franti and
Spearhead's celebratory song, "Power to the Peaceful." Three
thousand of us leaped rhythmically into the air as we helped the
band sing our new planet into existence.

Saul Williams made us shiver with joy and inspiration as he
delivered his blazingly tender poetic invocations. The man is a
humble force of nature and a master alchemist. He's able to
express both an ingenious love for the sublime glory of creation
and a holy rage against the plutocratic phallocrats who are
vandalizing it.

Ani DiFranco is an electrifying performer. She broke our hearts
with lyrics like "The hawk keeps circling above the strip mall,"
"Take away our playstations and we're a Third World nation,"
and "There's a traffic jam on the road to nowhere." But she also
lent her genius to the vision of the new world we're creating
together, blessing us with reminders like "Practice happiness,"
"Put some beauty back into the world," "I've been falling in love
again and again all day long."

The Latino hip-hop of Ozomatli was infectious, melodic, and
arousing. It was also exuberantly anti-war, anti-violence, and
anti-hatred. Even if I had been oblivious to their message, I
could not have stopped my body from breaking into full-out
Dionysian dancing. But as I fed from the double infusion of kick-
ass music and thrilling idealism, I lived (and danced) in
paradise.

In recognition of their stellar contributions to building a wildly
exciting, intensely interesting peace on Earth, I hereby
nominate Michael Franti, Spearhead, Saul Williams, Ani
DiFranco, and Ozomatli for the Nobel Peace Prize. I also
nominate them for Grammies, MacArthur Foundation "Genius"
grants, all-expense-paid vacations to Burning Man (the capital
city of our new planet), and their own TV show.


*PRONOIA. For those of you who haven't heard the word, pronoia
is the sneaking suspicion that the whole world is conspiring to
shower you with blessings; the growing conviction that life is
inherently designed to liberate you from suffering, fill you with
joy, and make you really smart.

Subject Iraq War Lies

It has always been inevitable that the governments of Britain & America would attack Iraq and sieze Iraq's oil. The lengths they have gone to and the depths they have plumbed are disturbing. This shocking "intelligence" scandal exemplifies the campaign of spin, propaganda & outright lies about Iraq.

The latest intelligence dossier about Iraq was copied, almost word-for-word, from old articles, including one written by a student about Iraq's activities in 1990 - before the last gulf war!

The report, presented as current, relevant intelligence by Britain and praised by Colin Powell, was not only hopelessly out of date. It was riddled with errors, including original typing errors.

It is ironic that Mr Powell described the fabricated document's "exquisite detail" regarding Iraq's deception activities. The document itself is clearly a deception, though it is hardly exquisite.


Some parts were even embellished and exaggerated, in order to make Iraq look worse and to suggest a link between Iraq and terrorism.

Where the original document read "aiding OPPOSITION GROUPS", the new document, changed by the British government, now reads "supporting TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS".

Clearly this information is not credible. Clearly it is 12 years out of date. Clearly it is inaccurate. Clearly it has been knowingly altered, making it even more so. CLEARLY WE ARE BEING LIED TO, MANIPULATED AND MISLED OVER IRAQ!


America's recent show to the UN was equally flawed and equally ridiculous.

And in choosing to present their "evidence" to the public like a circus instead of using the proper channels, the American government is itself in breach of UN Resolution 1441 (Section 10).


So many of the points made are untrue. For example, the CIA has long acknowledged that Iraq could not have gassed the Kurds (who are NOT Saddam's "own people") because Iraq has never had access to the nerve agent used.

In fact the Kurds are Iraq's enemy. And it is the Kurds (Iraq's enemy) who are thought to have harboured al-Qaida members - not Iraq.


Clearly Britain and America are desperate be to attack Iraq and steal their oil.

Don't confuse Britain with its government, ditto America.
The British Government consists of a group of people who got into power because the British people were so disgusted with politicians per se that they couldn't face the prospect of voting. As a result the government got in with the lowest electoral turnout in history.
George Bush's election is well documented.
I don't judge Germans on the behaviour of Adolf Hitler, Americans on the behaviour of George Bush or Donald Rumsfeld or muslim people on the behaviour of Sadam Hussein.

I'm also not convinced by the oil argument. Britain has its own supply of high grade crude. Middle Eastern crude is plentiful but of low quality. I think the oil argument is more accurately "what can you buy with the worlds 2nd largest supply of oil" problem.

I do believe that Sadam and his regime are not worthy of the Iraqi people but I think this is a problem for the Muslim nations to sort out. If they had asked for Britain and America's help then I would feel more comfortable with the situation.

As it stands I feel that this war is possibly the worst idea that has ever echoed around the hollowness that is the inside of a politicians head.

It is 2nd only to the bunch of cretins who decided crashing airliners into skyscrapers was a good idea.

Subject We should not go to war with Iraq

The United States is facing a dilemma. A madman is loose, he is in
charge of a country and is seeking nuclear weapons. There is no doubt
that he has used WMD (weapons of mass destruction) on his own people
before, and It is doubtful that he would have any qualms against using
them on us. Despite this, a US occupation or attack on Iraq would
be unjust, immoral, and likely result in negative consequences for
the United States.
A US attack on Iraq without the approval of the UN Security Council
is not only a bad idea, but it goes against the constitution. The
constitution states that “This Constitution, and the laws of the United
States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties
made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States,
shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state
shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any
State to the contrary notwithstanding.”(U.S. Constitution, article
VI) The UN charter states “All Members shall refrain in their international
relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial
integrity or political independence of any state.” (Charter, article
2) If it is against the constitution to go to violate the UN charter,
and it is against the UN charter for us to go to war, than it is against
the constitution to go to war with Iraq.
America must set the precedent for the world. How can we claim to
support freedom and justice when by doing so we are breaking the “Supreme
law of the land”? Even if a violation of the constitution is not a
good enough reason for us to stop war mongering, there is a plethora
of strictly logical reasons against the war on Iraq. What will attacking
Iraq do other than give us the hatred of the third world? We might
be able to remove Saddam from power, but it is unlikely. We never
found Osama bin Laden, despite the fact that we are occupying Afghanistan,
and it is well documented that Saddam has far more organized leadership
and a more competent intelligence service. He has millions of supporters,
and could hide with any one of them, just as well as he is currently
hiding his WMD.
There is also a possibility of the US finding Iraq’s alleged chemical
weapons. At this moment, the UN weapons inspectors can look any were
in the country that they want, and if we knew were any of it was,
we would have found it by now. If we do find were it is, we send our
weapons inspectors there and they will detain and destroy any weapons.
What more could we do if we occupied Iraq? Secretary of State Coulin
Powell says that we would be able to interrogate the scientists that
are worked on the projects. As US satellite pictures saw, though,
the stockpiles can and are moved. How will it help to interrogate
the scientist? If there is a stockpile that cannot be moved, do you
think Saddam will let the scientist who knows were it is live? All
we are likely to do with the war is get some of their scientists killed
along with members of their military and their civilians.
There is a reason why we don’t have UN approval for the war on Iraq:
the majority of the world does not support a war. With the opinion
of the US as low as it is, another blow to our popularity would most
certainly be harmful to the interests of the United States. The worse
the US appears in the eyes of the world, the more likely it is that
our resolutions will be vetoed in the future, and the less aid we
are likely to get when we get into an armed conflict.
Attacking Iraq would work against US interests. A war would bring
misery and death to the Iraqi people, and make the Middle East even
more set in there hatred of America. Attacking Iraq would disregard
international law, and violate the constitution. A moral, peaceful
solution is the one that we must strive for unless we wish to cast
the values of justice and peace into the crematory. If Colin Powell
thinks a peaceful solution is possible in North Korea, why isn’t it
in Iraq? I believe that it is. In time, I believe that the weapons
inspectors will find any WMD that Iraq has. I believe that we stand
against a war, and come out of Iraq peacefully, and not only will
the world praise us for it, but we will live in a more peaceful and
free world.

Then again, what do I know? I’m just a 10th grade humanities student.

The U.S. Needs to Open Up to the World
To this European, America is trapped in a fortress of arrogance and ignorance

Europeans have always looked at America with a mixture of fascination and puzzlement, and now, increasingly, disbelief. How is it that a country that prides itself on its economic success could have so many very poor people? How is it that a country so insistent on the rule of law should seek to exempt itself from international agreements? And how is it that the world's beacon of democracy can have elections dominated by wealthy special interest groups?

I could fill this page with the names of Americans who have influenced, entertained and educated me. They represent what I admire about America: a vigorous originality of thought, and a confidence that things can be changed for the better.

That was the America I lived in and enjoyed from 1978 until 1983. That America was an act of faith - the faith that "otherness" was not threatening but nourishing, the faith that there could be a country big enough in spirit to welcome and nurture all the diversity the world could throw at it.

But since Sept. 11, that vision has been eclipsed by a suspicious, introverted America, a country-sized version of that peculiarly American form of ghetto: the gated community. A gated community is defensive. Designed to keep the "others" out, it dissolves the rich web of society into a random clustering of disconnected individuals. It turns paranoia and isolation into a lifestyle.

Surely this isn't the America that anyone dreamed of; it's a last resort, nobody's choice. It's especially ironic since so much of the best new thinking about society, economics, politics and philosophy in the last century came from America.

Unhampered by the snobbery and exclusivity of much European thought, American thinkers vaulted forward - courageous, innovative and determined to talk in a public language. But, unfortunately, over the same period, the mass media vaulted backward, thriving on increasingly simple stories and trivializing news into something indistinguishable from entertainment. As a result, a wealth of original and subtle thought - America's real wealth - is squandered.

This narrowing of the American mind is exacerbated by the withdrawal of the left from active politics. Virtually ignored by the media, the left has further marginalized itself by a retreat into introspective cultural criticism. It seems content to do yoga and gender studies, leaving the fundamentalist Christian right and the multinationals to do the politics. The separation of church and state seems to be breaking down too. Political discourse is now dominated by moralizing, like George W. Bush's promotion of American "family values" abroad, and dissent is unpatriotic. "You're either with us or against us" is the kind of cant you'd expect from a zealous mullah, not an American President.

When Europeans make such criticisms, Americans assume we're envious. "They want what we've got," the thinking goes, "and if they can't get it, they're going to stop us from having it."

But does everyone want what America has? Well, we like some of it but could do without the rest: among the highest rates of violent crime, economic inequality, functional illiteracy, incarceration and drug use in the developed world. President Bush recently declared that the U.S. was "the single surviving model of human progress." Maybe some Americans think this self-evident, but the rest of us see it as a clumsy arrogance born of ignorance.

Europeans tend to regard free national health services, unemployment benefits, social housing and so on as pretty good models of human progress. We think it's important - civilized, in fact - to help people who fall through society's cracks. This isn't just altruism, but an understanding that having too many losers in society hurts everyone. It's better for everybody to have a stake in society than to have a resentful underclass bent on wrecking things

To many Americans, this sounds like socialism, big government, the nanny state. But so what? The result is: Europe has less gun crime and homicide, less poverty and arguably a higher quality of life than the U.S., which makes a lot of us wonder why America doesn't want some of what we've got.

Too often, the U.S. presents the "American way" as the only way, insisting on its kind of free-market Darwinism as the only acceptable "model of human progress."

But isn't civilization what happens when people stop behaving as if they're trapped in a ruthless Darwinian struggle and start thinking about communities and shared futures? America as a gated community won't work, because not even the world's sole superpower can build walls high enough to shield itself from the intertwined realities of the 21st century.

There's a better form of security: reconnect with the rest of the world, don't shut it out; stop making enemies and start making friends. Perhaps it's asking a lot to expect America to act differently from all the other empires in history, but wasn't that the original idea?

Twelve years ago, in February of 1991, I crossed the border between Saudi Arabia and Iraq with the 24th Infantry Division. Back then I was a 20-year-old Abrams tank crewman, and I fought in several battles in southern Iraq. I can say from personal experience, the media got it wrong. The first Gulf War wasn't clean, it wasn't pretty, and it wasn't precise. In the chaos and destruction of battle, anything can happen. We killed a lot of people.

Like many of the men and women I served with, I do not believe that President Bush or Secretary of State Powell, in his presentation at the United Nations on Wednesday, has made the case that Iraq poses an imminent threat to the United States. Without proving imminent threat, the administration has failed outright to justify its rush to war. Many senior military leaders, including Generals Norman Schwarzkopf, Anthony Zinni and Wesley Clark, have all questioned the wisdom of another war with Iraq.

Thousands of veterans of all U.S. wars have stepped forward, marched in demonstrations and raised their voices to say that the nation they defended should not be attacking other nations. There is no sense of just cause in the U.S. armed forces today. Most recently we veterans have been joined in our message by families with loved ones in the
military.

Tens of thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of
Iraqis could die in a long, drawn-out war in Iraq.

These people should call themselves Veterans with no common sence! As a Veteran of the United States Air Force I fully support the war in Iraq, as do countless thousands of other Veterans. Mr. Sheehan-Miles should destroy his DD-214! No freedom loving Veteran would stand by and allow Saddam Hussein to get away with the evil he inflicts on his people!
Does Saddam Hussein have weapons of mass destruction? I don't know, and I don't care! What I do know about and care about is that we have a chance to rid the world of this evil, evil person and should take advantage of it now!

I was just wondering if Iraqi veterans are organizing to protest the "lies" they have seen from their government?

Do they think their continued production and concealment of weapons of mass destruction is a bad policy by their government. Can they protest or organize at all?

If you can answer these questions to YOURSELF truthfully and follow the logic you will start to understand these issues with a bit more depth. Your conclusion may come out the same but you will at least have reached that conclusion with your eyes wide open.

I am german. My grandfather survived Hitler Germany. He experienced cruel oppression, he also experienced the Allies' ruthless bombardment of the city of Dresden.
Your point is correct and irrelevant at the same time. No one helps oppressed people by dropping bombs on them. You will hit the wrong guys. Not a pleasant thought, isn't it?

Obviously Germany learned nothing from that war. They did not see the evil of Hitler coming and they defend Hussein even as his troops shoot refugees trying to leave Bassra.

The US did learn something from that war. We are executing a war of precision bombing the likes of which this world has never seen. If the technology had existed in the 1940’s we would have done it then.

‘Human shields’ from several European nations left Iraq today and held a press conference saying their mission was done. They were convinced the US is doing an excellent job of hitting only military targets. The civilian damage they saw was mostly from Iraqi anti aircraft fire.

The people of Europe should support the war in Iraq! How many murderous governmental leaders to they need to see before they do something about it? Saddam Hussein orders the killing of women, children, and anyone else who apposes him. How many people does he have to gas? How many civilians does he have to shoot while trying to escape to freedom? Don't you people even care what he is doing to people over there? Perhaps you support his death squads! What is wrong with you people? Have you no soul? A friend tried to tell me that the war is wrong in the eyes of the pope. The Pope said there is never a time for war or violence. My response to his statement was simple. Why then does the Pope have armed guards at the Vatican? Why does he have body guards? If Saddam Husseins Republican Guard were to storm the Vatican, would the Popes guards shoot back? Or would they allow Saddam Hussein to take control if it? I know the answer and so do you!

I just visited that site above and I am horrified that thought as exemplified there is possible in the world's oldest democracy. When peace loving people are referred to as worms, insects and mushrooms then I have to remember what Hitler, Goebbels and Goering spread among our german people as opinion makers in the 30s of last century.
Polemics like that, attempts of outcasting opposing opinions like it is done on that website and in its forums: my comments have been taken out in matter of 15 minutes! They obviously weren't pleasant enough, so those guys don't care a great deal in preserving the right for free speech. And that is the very beginning.
You have an enemy inside Your country. As a nation powerful enough to use nuclear weapons on others You have the responsibility of keeping guys like those posting messages in that very website from gaining any political power.
This isn't a very healthy mainstream ... I do hope it isn't a mainstream at all, but I don't live in the U.S. thus I don't have a depiction of "street opinions" over there.
Perhaps some of You can help on that

Subject Lasting Peace

I would like to talk about a few other wars before I give my comment on the war that faces us now. Hitler trying to take over the world, not caring about the faces and the tears of the innocent millions he slaughtered. The Japanese bombing Pearl again not caring about innocents slaughtered. And Viet Nam with the people of the US seperated in their feelings and millions of our boys slaughtered. If we had stayed out of world war 2 Hitler already had France and was just about to take England, then today there would be no Jewish people and we would be under Hitlers rule. Sometimes people if their is a cancer you have to cut it out before it spreads. If you are bitten by a mad dog you don't tell your doctor you want to wait a few weeks for treatment you get shots to ensure you don't contact the diease. We dropped the bomb on Japan after they had attached us a Pearl and innocent people were killed but in the long run stopping the war when they did they saved countless lives. We must act now and stop Sadium before we have to cry for the millions of our friends and children that are used as white mice in his germ and chemical war. Get behind America less cut out this cancer before it spreads.

Your point of view shows evidence that in Your eyes all those wars You quoted were of the same nature. Regarding history this is an invalid basis thus Your conclusion cannot remain left without further discussion.
In the very first place You cannot separate the war against Hitler from the war against Japan as these two countries had a treaty link at those times ("Stahlpakt"). It took president Roosevelt pretty much time, i. e. 2 years, before he decided to participate in that war. The attack on Pearl Harbour then let him no further choice. If Hitler had won WW II or if he had been defeated by Stalin remains another question of less interest for it is one to be answered by mere speculation.
The point is: Hitler showed open aggressiveness, ignoring international rules and started the war himself.
Vietnam on the other side didn't start a war on You but rather vice versa. America wanted to stop communism. North Vietnam never attempted to enter U.S. territory. War is always a slaughter, there are no "clean" wars, even if TV coverage wants to make us believe that. It wasn't only "Your boys" that became casualties of war but also a lot of Vietnamese guys, among them lots of children. I guess You remember the images, don't You.
And don't get me wrong on this: as a German guy I am grateful that Your people freed us from Hitler's rule despite the fact, that the U.S. also made it easy for him before by signing the treaty of Versailles. I am also aware of the fact that the U.S. were the only signers that didn't ratify the treaty - thanks for that, too. But Versailles made it easy for Hitler to rise, destroying the first democracy in Germany.
Now for Iraq: Saddam this time hasn't initiated a war. He didn't even make the attempt. Even that he didn't play by U.N. rules which he agreed to before doesn't justify war. You should never forget what war really means. I don't refer to romantic "clean war" depictions in TV that harshly divert from war reality. You fear biological and chemical weapons but there is no evidence of 'em, considering the latest Blix report. There are further differences to Hitler: Saddam in fact had strong U.S. support in the early 80s. Remember the war Iran - Iraq? U.S. provided the weaponry for money. Now that the U.S. cashed in You want the weapons back?
Again don't get me wrong: Saddam is a dictator and not only me but all Germans, French and civilian Iraqi want to get rid of him. But since war hits rather civilians than Saddam (evidence: Gulf War I) I cannot support it before any other diplomatic means has been exhausted on that issue. And we are far away from that. And those inspections are another difference to the Third Reich when there were no inspectors at all.
Then there is a general questions: Having 30 totalitarian regimes currently in the world, why is it always Iraq the U.S. aims at. Others are not only suspected to carry WMD, but they HAVE nuclear weapons: North Corea e. g. They freely admitted it. But there is hardly diplomatic pressure, there are no weapons' inspectors and there are no troops. You know why? It wouldn't be easy enough. And there we are facing the true reasons for Bush's Iraq policy that is NOT about bringing freedom. Bush doesn't truely care about Iraqi population. He needs a political success. He "won" his first election on the edge, almost hanging over. He had a poor political start and it was - weird as it may sound - the terrorists of 9 / 11 that raised his popularity. But his war against terrorism which he gave up now for obvious reasons failed in its purpose to get Bin Laden dead or alive. This war was in vain from the beginning on. Terrorism is to be dealt with by police methods and thorough investigation, not by sending troops somewhere in good faith that there might be some target (like in Afghanistan). The liberation from the Taliban was a positive side effect but not part of the original purpose of the Afghanistan war.
Now he has to present something to his voters. So he chose Iraq thereby psychologically fighting his inner complex to do it better than his daddy did. Bush is said to have passed a red traffic light having drunk too much. Today he passes a lot of political red lights and is about to forcefully hurt international rules. In comparison the breech of international law that will be done by the U.S. by going to war without U.N. mandate might be larger than the violation of Saddam carrying missiles that have an unsignificantly larger range than permitted.
So by the criteria of Bush: U.S. has WMD, U.S. violates international law and U.S. have STARTED a war, not defended against one. Tell me who is the aggressor here and who threatens peace most?
Again: I don't support Saddam. But he gained power from former U.S. support, he could already be dealt with in another Gulf war that had true justification by the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam. But the U.S. government kept him alive and at power for one reason: they feared another fundamentalist state like Iran might replace Saddam after the war. They considered that possibility the worse choice. Considering what kind of threat Iran means to other countries at the moment, I guess that assessment has been wrong.
And now a lot of diplomatic porcelaine is crushed by open announced intentions of the U.S. government to hurt U.N. rules and to play world's strongest country. If international law doesn't apply to the U.S. and the U.S. consider themselves beyond international law, the threat will be clear. And there will be a whole world against the U.S.. Despite its military power, this won't be something the U.S. could possibly deal with. What I do fear are the results of that kind of future development. Nobody can truely want to go that way. International protest against this course of action proves that. And it is good to see that U.S. citizens and U.S. government are not the same thing.

I've read all the postings and found there are 2 main views on our position with Iraq. 1)War with Iraq is the right thing to do because saddam is dangerous and his people need liberation. 2)War with Iraq is wrong because it is not peaceful. 3)The USA should set up a government for Iraq to help it develop in the rigth direction.
Saddly few people have the thinking capacity to develop these thoughts. If they could they would realize this. 1)War with Iraq is not the same thing as getting rid of Saddam.War with Iraq is war with people of Iraq (the army includes people of Iraq, they are not volunteers). They are the ones we fight. The ones you people say we are liberating. 2)War with Iraq is not wrong simply because it is not peaceful. War is meant to bring peace after all. Instead, war with Iraq is wrong because Iraq is not our enemy, Saddam is our enemy. 3)Our country is based on people choosing their own form of government. To say the people of Iraq cannnot do the same is more oppressive then Britain denying the colonies their freedom.
Go to war, no. Get rid of saddam, yes. Set up government for Iraq, unconstitutional.

How can you save a nation buy declaring war on it, that is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard. If USA really had the intention to “only” disarm Saddam Hussein, they would have done that already and with no means of war. I mean every one knows the famous CIA. The CIA can bring down Saddam Hussein and his sons, with out even trying. Not everyone knows the real reason why America is doing this war, its for the oil, for the control of the middle-east , to build military bases there and then maybe use those bases to help bomb Iran, to benefit Israel some how. So bush can be popular in his coming elections, and just for the sheer fun of killing( I am not being hard on the American people they are good people, but their government is the worst government in the world.). And If US is going to disarm Iraq so called weapons of mass destruction, why doesn’t it disarm North Korea(not saying anything bad or good about North Korea), who kicked the US diplomats out of its country, and said with no fear that they are not afraid to use their nuclear weapons, so why did US do nothing about it, because they were afraid because they did not want to go to war, with a country that had REAL WEAPONS. And plus come on, real, real, real innocent people are going to dye( no doubt abut that). I think we are smart enough to know the difference between right and wrong.

I read your argument on the site you listed. Here is my response............

Your arguments are not unique or original and rely almost entirely on discussions and facts from people whose interest is in regime change in Iraq at any cost.

It is not the intent of the War, but the method that is a problem for most of the people who are "against the war", which includes a vast majority of people from all over the world. To simply look within our own country for approval in a world connected by instantaneous transmission through TV and the Internet, is to be naive. Even if we are "right", we live in a global community and must work WITH nations and their people in order to be successful and be a World Leader. The global business connections alone make this necessary.

America must stand for a higher Moral Imperative as the "only superpower". This means respectively taking the time to act diplomatically. It also means carefully picking their battles. A case could be made for Regime Change in many areas of the world, especially Africa. And Africa has been the site of terrorist attacks against America as well. Or Pakistan, who harbors Bin Laden and has Muslim fundamentalist extremists in a government taken over by a military coup...and they have nuclear weapons ! Many heavily armed countries stay in a state of near anarchy...which is not true of Iraq. Torture & killing is status quo in South American countries (especially under dictators we have installed, like Pinochet. Read the TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER and find out why the U.S. will not support the International Court to try individuals worldwide for crimes against humanity). Who's next?

America has a history of doing the wrong thing, but points fingers at everybody else.

If you simply spend a few hours watching the news reports about the War, you will find the Truth changes minute by minute. The official government spokespeople report different "facts" throughout the day. The final analysis is often not known until much later and never reaches the public as significantly as the initial report.

Just take another look at the movie BORN ON THE 4th OF JULY, starring Tom Cruise. It's based on a true story and is consistent with other stories I have heard from veterans of the VietNam & 1st Gulf War. An article in the newspaper last month says there is a six-month wait to get an appointment at Veteran's Hospitals, and that many were to be closed. Where is our commitment to our "heroes" beyond a Flag for the widow?

It's no wonder that Muslim zealots consider us "immoral". We can do better. Unfortunately, George Bush Jr. does not have proper experience to be a President who can handle such sweeping changes and aggressive war policies. He is at the mercy of those who surround him in the inner chambers. Take a look at them and you will see source of our current policies. These men were NOT ELECTED and are not able to be held accountable by the public or congress. This is wrong.

And that is why this War is wrong. Our government was designed to be both FOR the People and BY the People. That means there must be a debate with the true facts revealed. If not, we become just like "them".

And that is far worse than being patient for a cruel dictator to be disarmed. There will just be another one somewhere else unless we get an International System of Enforcement so that no one nation can be singled out as the "bad guy" for demanding governments "behave".

We certainly don't need more enemies. Our economy simply can't take on endless "wars on terrorism" with such huge deficits and significant social problems like unemployment and lack of adequate medical care. At some point, we will all have to pay dearly.

I think that we are already beginning to pay now.

Iraq has committed more atrocities under Saddam Hussein then the US may have done in its 200+ years of history. We have also tried very hard as a society to learn from our mistakes. But there will always be a time and place when the good, peace loving people of the world must stand up for those who cannot protect themselves. Other wise we are as bad as the people who stood by in WW II and watched train loads of Jews and gays be hauled off to slaughter by the Nazis.

If so, and the World does not stop your regime, then you will have to think of the "repressed" in Iran. Next thing or station: the "unwilling" France, Germany and others...

As for the World War II, here's what I have to say as Russian:
You can boast it and make yourselves believe that you won this war but we in Russia know who really broke the backbone to German fascists. The war had already lasted for 5 years in Europe when you came. And you didn't do it until Russia threw them out and started chasing the dying beast in its home. And then you came to step on its dead body and take a victorious picture. And we paid 30 million lives to make it happen. So, don't tell me that private Ryan saved Europe.
As we say in Russia you came to harvest what you haven't planted.

First off, 5 years is a slight exageration to say at least. Nevermind.
Anyway, food and blood are two different things, will you argue? We paid enourmous price for this victory. In Russia there is no litterary a family who haven't lost 2 or 3 people at this war. I lost two grandfathers. I have never seen them.
And what you are trying to do is called stealing. You are trying to steal our victory.
BTW, if you start using such arguments as Berlin (which is not the fault of our people but the regime's),let me remind you of Drezden bombing in return. Check it, you killed about 300 000 people there, mostly civilians, and just shaved the city off.

While I can understand the suffering the Russian people felt I also see that the Russian government signed a treaty with Hitler that delayed their entry into the war. During that delay hundreds of thousands of Russians died in a badly planned and terribly executed Russian invasion of Finland prior to Hitler’s invasion of Russia. As much suffering was brought on by the Russian government as by Hitler.

The Murmansk run started in early 1941 and ran through at least 1946. Stockpiles of American C Rations were feeding Soviets troops in the field until the late 1940’s. I’m not trying to steal anyone’s victory. It was a joint victory. The united world kicked the Axis butts.

As I have said. If we had the technology in the 1940’s that we have now things would have been different. The Russians also killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and lost hundreds of thousands of troops during the invasion of Berlin. WW II sucked for everybody involved.

The US has also spent the last 50 years trying to develop the weapons to execute the war you saw this past month. All to save civilian lives based on the experiences of WW II. Every US war since has seen a major drop in civilian casualties. Besides, like a German general once said. Killing civilians is a waste of ammo.

Apparently a majority of the people in the rest of the world (including, surprisingly, even the Pope) also do not agree with or "believe" the spin on this war that the Bush Administration is purporting.
And. are you happy about what is going on in Iraq because all the Iraqi citizens have guns to protect themselves from the U.S. Military invading their cities & homes? Isn't that exactly what gun-owners want for America...gun ownership to prevent the "takeover" of a surpressive government?<--

I’m a Roman Catholic, but don’t even get me started on the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church and war. Where was the outrage from the Pope when Hussein gassed in own citizens?

March 5, 2003 -- 'THE rebirth of the peace movement." This is how sections of the Western media describe the marches that attracted 30 million people in some 600 cities, in 25 countries, across the globe in recent weeks. Last week, a group of "peaceniks" gathered in London to discuss ways of nursing the "reborn" child into adulthood. By coincidence, today marks the 50th anniversary of Josef Stalin's death.

The Soviet dictator was the father of the first "peace movement," which for years served as an instrument of the Kremlin's global policy.

Stalin's "peace movement" was launched in 1946 at a time when he had not yet developed a nuclear arsenal and was thus vulnerable to a U.S. nuclear attack. Stalin also needed time to consolidate his hold on his newly conquered empire in eastern and central Europe while snatching chunks of territory in Iran.

Pablo Picasso, a "fellow traveler" with the French Communist Party, designed the famous dove of peace as the emblem of the movement. French poet Paul Eluard, another fellow traveler, composed an ode inspired by Stalin. The "peaceniks" were told to wear white shirts, release white doves during their demonstrations and shake their clenched fists against "imperialists and revanchistes."

Soon it became clear that the "peace movement" was not opposed to all wars, but only to those that threatened the U.S.S.R., its allies and its satellites.

For example, the peaceniks did not object to Stalin's decision to keep the entire Chechen nation in exile in Siberia. The peaceniks did not march to ask Stalin to withdraw his forces from Iranian Azerbaijan and Kurdistan. When Stalin annexed 15 percent of Finland's territory, none of the peaceniks protested.

Neither did they march when the Soviets annexed the Baltic states. Nor did they grumble when Soviet tanks rolled into Warsaw and Budapest, and a decade later also in Prague. But when America led a coalition under a U.N. mandate to prevent North Korean Communists from conquering the south, peaceniks were on the march everywhere.

The movement targeted Western democracies and sought to weaken their resolve against the Soviet threat.
